McConnell might have a problem securing votes within his majority, the same as Boehner has had for the last 3 years.
Well Boehner and McConnell⊠you built that.
I think the only thing they can get votes for is doing things against Obama. Obama would not need to do any of the executive action stuff if Congress would take any sort of action at all. Given the conservative base, the only good immigration plan is to militarize the border.
And really, using funding is not an unusual strategy one way or another. Putting things in to fund projects and so on always happens. Even having debates about things, âwe are going to do xâ. âI will veto xâ. That is fine.
The issue is, nothing really gets accomplished with a shut down other than making the Tea Party happy.
Insanity is doing the same this over and over again while expecting a different resultâŠ
But what the heckâŠwhat have they done for the past six years other than obstruct?
âWe have to be careful,â he said, âon whether weâre going to risk alienating that bloc.â
Since when do Republicans care about further alienating the Hispanic bloc? This is laughable. Predictably, the GOP is going off the rails and there is no one who can rein them in. Let the Republican circus continue.
The GOP business friendsâhuge contractors and all those snacking on government spendingâdonât want the government shut down. Theyâve used the TeaPeople to amass power, but the big cigars have no interest in the social agenda or cutting any spending at all.
It seems like the dog is about to catch up to the car it was chasing.

The Republican Party is beholden to two masters- the Rich and the Poor White Racists. Theyâve built their political power off of the latter and use the former for money. They need to decide who they actually represent before the country falls to pieces.
âIncoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) sounded a note of caution on Tuesday, saying Obama still has the veto penâŠâ
A moment of sanity?
WHAT? The REPUBLIcaN BraND IS sHUTTING dOWN the GOverNMENt. THE PEOPle GAVe REpUBLicans A BROAD maNDATE to SAY NO to OB AMAs HARMfuL POlicies thAT HELP reaL aMERIcanS AND sHUT DOWN the GOVERnMENT!!1!1!!!one!!!1!!!
Welcome to your nightmare Mitch.
I have a sudden urge to go dig up my old Alice Cooper albums.
I think Mitch sees the writing on the wall, and it isnât pretty. Yes, the GOP made huge gains this cycle but many of the folks that won arenât in the McConnell Caucus, theyâre in the Ted Cruz/Rand Paul caucus of crazies. Despite the Beltway conventional wisdom that the GOP nominated moderates, they didnât. They nominated crazy people over craziER people. These are people who rose up the ranks in the era of Tea Party batshittery, and theyâre all going to be clamoring to be the next Ted Cruz/Rand Paul. How do you do that? You take ridiculously extreme positions on everything and you vote against anything the president wants done. That also means voting against anything McConnell wants to use to build his legacy.
I think McConnell is trying to head the TP off at the pass by shutting down their dreams of government shutdowns and impeachment. Heâs trying to signal to his caucus that itâs time to be adults and get things done. He can forget about it unless heâs prepared to spend a lot of time begging and pleading with Harry Reid.
Donât let your craven leadership back off Tea Pottyâ! YOU built that majority; makemâ do your bidding!
Remember: You know you hate the black President more than you love this republic, andâŠonly YOU can save the entire country from the threat of a sound economy and decent healthcare!

The most fascinating part is the GOP DID alienate the Hispanic bloc and the Hispanic blocâs response was to not show up to vote for either side in this past election.
I am beginning to wonder if the Hispanic bloc has all that much of an impact or if they are simply a one-issue factor. Specifically, once immigration reform is in place, they will never be a bloc again. I would challenge the leaders of that bloc to encourage their voters to get the heck out there and have their say.
Now they are talking about rescission rather than shutting down the government. Still theyâd have to pass it with a veto proof majority though they think it will make them look like they are doing something while they are not doing anything but avoiding the pain of a government shutdown.
At this point, the GOP needs to do what they might see as the unthinkable. They need to sacrifice a few election cycles, jettison FOX News and rework their whole strategy. Once they do that and have a workable platform that doesnât hinge on hating Democrats or the President, they can come back stronger and without the need to rig elections in order to win. It means throwing out stuff which Reagan did and go for sensible economic policies, sensible environmental policies, and sensible policies period.
Right now, theyâre clinging to a leaking dingy and taking the whole country down with them.
Mitch may be supreme at the arcane rules of the Senate but thatâs just not going to help him when it comes to dealing with the Baggers. I never wanted to see him get the majority leader position heâs dreamed about all his life, but itâs starting to feel a lot better now as things are beginning to unfold. The next two years will probably be the worst two years of his life.
Pass the popcorn.
[McConnellâs office pointed to a Gallup poll that showed a 10-point drop in the GOPâs approval ratings after the 16-day government shutdown in 2013. It took roughly a year for the party to recover.]
The real problem is that Americans have a short memory.
