Discussion: GOP Includes Provision To Expedite Confirmation Of Gen. Mattis In The CR

Mattis is inexcusable. Refuse to pass the bill with his waiver in it, and put it on the President-elect’s head along with the squirrel tail he already has.

Agree. The civilian position of secretary of defense being occupied by a recent military person (directly against the intent of that role) should be faced and seriously discussed.

These people are cowards and are afraid facing any questions. The tactics of a morally bankrupt party that is scared of facing the light of the day and the questions they SHOULD be asked. Nothing but malicious cowards.

If the left can’t suck it up and stand up to these corrupt politicians here, what hope have we for the days that come?

If the government is shut down is Congress officially in recess? If so, do I smell a SCJ Garland?

I do not know relevant laws but I suspect he can’t be a recess appointment. It is not a matter of not being approved by the Senate during the regular session. If I understand it correctly (and I may not) it’s a matter that the recent military not being eligible to run DoD without a waiver.

Do the Repuglicans and President-Elect Trump want his first presidential accomplishment to be a government shutdown before he is even inaugurated . . and before Christmas? Is this the “Make America Great Again” leadership Trump promised? It seems more like that of a banana republic. Is this what the American people have elected? Electors, please take note and please read Federalist #68.

Quite possibly yes, yes, and yes.
Shutting down the government probably equals draining the swamp to Trump’s followers who don’t really pay attention to such things anyway.

So, they’ve held a corporation hostage, triggered a flareup in China-US relations, and now want to shut down Congress – all in the same week. When do they come for our lunch money?

Dems, stand your ground.

Give republicans the same respect and deference as they gave President Obama.

Dems should proclaim loudly that they will vote on Mattis provision just as soon as a vote on Garland is held.

Good. We’re going to find out very early in all of this how much spine the Democrats have.

While many Democrats warned Republicans about including the Mattis provision in the spending bill, it’s not immediately clear if they will risk shutting down the government over it.

If the Dems don’t go to the mat over this, they’re cooked. The issue is not Mattis, who is considered by Repubs and Dems to be one of the best choices for the post in a long time. It’s whether the Repubs, who refused to do anything for Obama for 8 years, even shutting the gov’t once and cliffhanging numerous other times, can simply get the Dems to cave on a matter of substance such as this.

If the Dems can’t say NO to this, and many other GOP obscenities, then why should they exist as a party?

There is no reason on earth why they should make deals with the devil.

Only this response will give people a reason to vote for them in 2018.

This won’t hurt the incoming administration. It will furlough career civil servants. It also likely means SS checks and other government benefits won’t go out on time either, leaving a lot of people without their expected income, right before the holidays.

Merry ****ing Christmas, from the party of faith and family values.

Absolutely true. Considering what’s coming down the pike, we need to let the country know where we stand now.

I think a government shutdown is a great way to start a total GOP rule of government. Welcome back to Thelma and Louise politics by the GOP. Y’all buckle up. If they do shut er down, midterm elections should be fun for the Democrats.
