Steyer and the Obamas have had a long friendship, not only because of deep pockets but they share the same interests on the environment. They came out here a lot for fundraisers, but yes, more of our well heeled lefties would make a difference.

What I find interesting, is those on the far left who decry BIG MONEY in politics. How the hell do they think things get done without it? Even for grassroots activities you need money. Liberal PACs are simply a tool. Like anything else, if used properly, it works. Misuse it and it doesn’t. If you take care of it between uses, it will be fine the next time you need it.
With regard to the congressman, please spare me your homily to political and family values. For your entire association with the dregs of society that have taken over the GOP, you went along with every namby pamby piece of BS they threw out there. NOW you are sick and tired of it. Hogwash!

We seem to be the party that doesn’t want to trust our instincts or be able to read tea leaves so we’re not yet embracing the idea that trumpism is failing in front of our faces, but seeing the R rats desert the ship tells us a lot. THEY can read the tea leaves, and to stay on board is suicidal. Even Ryan who’s still saying “We’re with him” is going to have to adjust the reality of what’s unfolding. Or else he’s playing a quiet game of waiting til PP and shortly after that My Pants is kicked out of office and he ascends.

So, my first question is, how well did Ralph Northam do in Bob Goodlatte’s district?
Based on where it is in the state, I’m guessing not great. But would be curious if he did substantially better than most Democratic candidates have done there in the recent past.
My assumption is this would be a pretty hard seat for the Democrats to pick up. But whether it’s merely a very heavy lift, or an almost impossible lift, I don’t know.
Anybody seen a source for this year’s VA gubernatorial race results, broken down by U.S. House district?
(I see you can get the results by county and city on here but don’t have time or inclination to crunch the numbers myself.)
That’s a great piece. I remember the ugliness of Prop 187 and Pete Wilson all too well, which in retrospect was certainly a foreshadowing of the Trumpian hard line on immigration.
Thanks to Michael Franti, I can’t hear Pete Wilson’s name without thinking of the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy’s reworking of the Dead Kennedys’ “California Uber Alles” (the Disposable Heroes’ version is aimed at a much more worthy target, of course).

Prop 187 worked briefly but then it led to the destruction of the R party in California, except for the brief stop at Ahnold’s door, but that was an aberration Now we are blue in all the ways that matter and Rs are like dinos or dodos.

Sounds like Rep. Goodlatte was recently handed a message from the voters of the Commonwealth. Or maybe it was that big disembodied hand over there, writing something on the wall. The distinction may be academic.
