You are right; I’ve noted that races are being called by the AP and ‘that’ is considered the gold standard. Should not the SoS of ‘any’ state be the one to announces who won?
I mean, I don’t hate the AP but they are not any kind of official authority.
I understand the trauma of a person who went to bed in Republican fantasy land and woke up in the reality of heavy unexpected Democratic turnout. Repeated story all across the country as “normal” turnouts and percentages did not adhere to the script because this was the biggest turnout for midterms (where Democrats have been notoriously slack) in decades. Keep counting them - they won’t change.
As crazy and unhinged as republicans are, there are some who have calmly assessed the reality of how bad the future looks for the party. The GOP knows it’s the party of the 1% and it’s frantically scrambling to somehow figure out how it will win elections as the demographics in the US continue to shift to liberal/progressive voters. There’s no way republicans would ever win an election if people registered and voted; the numbers simply aren’t there for them. The rethugs know the only way to “win” elections is to suppress minority voters, cheat by rigging elections, gerrymandering, use the office of secretary of state to purge minorities from voter rolls (Kemp/Kobach). This whining and stamping of GOP tiny feet will happen more and more, but it’s heartening to realize that the GOP knows its days are numbered.
In addition, the court documents claim Herrell was declared the winner of New Mexico open 2nd congressional district by some New Mexico media outlets on election night.
This is all rubbish - - she knew there were absentee ballots to be counted. She knows full well that she came up short in terms of total votes … ah but as a hopelessly, deliriously, passionately devoted idolizer of Trump, she is stepping up (even without a shred of evidence) to lend her shrill voice to the dishonest attempt to discredit the election process… no doubt she believes that all the “cool kids” need to support Trump and … do their part and scream "voter fraud’ even where there is no proof … because Trump keeps a list of naughty and nice.
She is doing the Trump stunt of making claims and accusations by third party reference - “Many people are saying”… “People have told me” … and also by making a total hash of the facts and then pointing to that pile of confusion as some sort of ‘evidence’ that something is amiss.
Will be interesting to see how far she will be willing to go with this charade… (she will get no where as far as altering the election) … but will she be willing to make a false claim under oath ?
The real issue is that we do not have a consistent mechanism for voting. Everyone should get to vote the same way in all 50 states. It is 2018 for G-ds sake. Absentee should be limited. A paper trail is a must. Election Day should be a holiday that employers must allow people to have to vote. Counting must be done in secure locations with limited to no access by press, political parties, candidates and lawyers. Equipment must be isolated from the internet. Equipment must be tested and calibrated on a frequent basis to ensure consistent performance. Polling and counting locations must be certified and standards for quality and performance must be documented.
“Everybody goes to bed on Tuesday night thinking that I’ve been declared the winner, and then suddenly on Wednesday morning they start hearing that there were 8,000 ballots that came up out of nowhere,” Herrell said on Fox News.
All those absentee and provo ballots were examined and counted by a bi-partisan group: Republicans and Democrats. That’s just the way it’s done. Giving physical custody of said ballots to A CAMPAIGN to “re-count” their own votes is a crazy idea. Even back before the voting machines took over the country, methods for changing paper ballots were well-known and often practiced by unscrupulous election officials.
re: “recently deceased”
To the best of my knowledge, all those dead voters who cast ballots voted absentee prior to their deaths. They wanted to exercise one last civic responsibility. If you have other information, state law in New Mexico requires that you report it to the Secretary of State.
We should also point out that absentee voting is popular because Secretaries iof State have played politics to make voting more difficult in some precincts. If you know that voting is going to require a 2 hour + wait, it makes sense to vote early or to vote via an absentee ballot. If we made sure that every precinct had sufficient machines (with power cords) and sufficient ballots, the count would be completed much more easily and with greater accuracy.
So my question is whether the SoS is just trying to make voting more difficult, or is there also the motive of providing a pretense for a challenge.
