I’ve heard that they have women in the military now./s
It makes entire sense for women to sign up for the draft.\
And if we actually had the draft, I doubt that we ever would have gone into Iraq, as some of our Senators and Reps would have been hearing a lot more skepticism from their constituents.
“I have the utmost respect and deepest appreciation for the young women
who bravely volunteer to serve our country, but I am adamantly opposed
to coercing America’s daughters to sign up for the Selective Service at
18 years of age,”
Coercing America’s daughters. You’re good with coercing America’s sons though? And I just love the backhanded, “I have the utmost respect and deepest appreciation for the young women who bravely volunteer to serve our country.” You have so much respect for them that they should be treated as lesser to men.
It has been so long since the GOP actually legislated (as opposed to using bills drafted by ALEC or lobbyists) that they don’t know how to do it anymore.
Duncan Hines, Jr. must have peed his pants when he introduced the amendment, trying to humiliate democrats, only to discover they thought it was a pretty fair idea and voted for it in droves. At the end, he was sweating bullets trying to show everyone that the democrats were just as cynical as HE is.
Are you trying to tell me that “legislating” doesn’t mean the same thing as introducing bills written by ALEC or lobbyists?
To carry a pregnancy to term,
To force unnecessary medical procedure,
To deny full benefits of the ACA,
etc, etc, etc, etc…
Obstruction, intransigence and backpedaling…its all they got. Its all they’ve ever had.
If they ever bother to pass anything, it will most definitely be something they’ve decided gets the hackles up of every Democratic pol and constituent first. It certainly would not be something a majority in Congress can potentially agree on. Playing politics with the law is all the GOP knows how to do anyway.
Wait…wait…shhhh…did something almost happen…? Anybody… No… Hello…
OH - finally we are seeing the Republican outreach to the woman voter … only problem is, the men now are little unhappy with being the sacrificial lambs for the Republican bent on going to war to support their form of a “healthy economy.”
Eliminating the draft was the best thing to ever happen to the military industrial complex. They get unlimited support from Republicans in Congress as well as Republican voters, all because it doesn’t cost anyone anything personally.
Don’t want to fight in that war? Don’t sign up.
This out-of-date squeamish chivalry is as sexist as blatant “No Girlz Allowed”. News flash–females can do everything that “real” human beings can do.
Wait, wait, wait!
So when it’s “young girls” having to sign up for the draft, they’re being “coerced”.
But when men have to sign up it’s “doing their patriotic duty”?
That’s some hot, loose bullshit right there.
It’s kind of funny that it almost happened to the other side, but you really do have to be careful. Even the most carefully argued slippery slope is liable to be misconstrued as a personal dare these days.
Draft registration is a waste of time and money. Somebody in Congress’ relatives must be making money from it. We haven’t had a draft since 1973 why does anyone need to register?
They know there’s no draft on currently, right?
His brief foray outside the bubble was pretty traumatic for him. I don’t expect to see him try it again.
This is actually how Congress ended up with their Obamacare exemption.
Some Republican shitbag, I forget who, introduced an amendment saying Congress would have to use Obamacare, basically. They thought it’d be cute and they would get Democrats to vote against it and get caught being hypocrites, but instead they were like “hey, sure!” (since Democrats actually believed in this project, and not some cynical Machiavellian social engineering like they said it was, unlike most of the nonsense Republicans do in Congress when they bother to work) But instead that created unnecessary problems and OPM had to get involved.
The core problem is Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) is a dimwit who got into office mostly because he has the same name as his father who he replaced in Congress. His father was a flag-waving reactionary much beloved by the easily conned voters who live in the rural eastern regions of San Diego county. I dare say that a large proportion of his voters likely think they are voting for his now-retired father.
