If convicted, Menendez should resign only if Christie agrees to follow the Merrick Garland precedent and not appoint someone in his final weeks as a historically unpopular governor.
More seriously, Menendez could say he isn’t going to resign until he finishes evaluating his prospects for winning an appeal. Lotsa ways to stall until Phil Murphy is governor.
And with Trump always saying and doing crazy stuff, there’s not much chance Republicans will be able to keep a spotlight on Menendez anyway.
