I wouldn’t say this crisis was created by Republicans. To say this is “illegal immigration” is to mis-characterize what is going on-it is a refugee situation, legally more or less the same as Syrians fleeing into Jordan or Turkey or Rwandans fleeing into Congo or Somalians fleeing into Kenya. For that matter it is equivalent to Cubans or Vietnamese refugees coming to the US.
The US has obligations under international law to accept refugees and evaluate each case on an individual basis. The ultimate cause lies not with US political parties, but with the governments of the source countries and their corruption and mis-management. Anyone who doubts this ought to ask themselves why unaccompanied kids are coming here from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, but not from Costa Rica or Panama.

It might actually be a dangerous action if Beck were able to clothe his xenophobic and nativist policies in a dignified human garb.
Fortunately, there’s no chance of that, because he’s right: the trench he’s speaking to froth and demonize at the drop of a hat, and will turn on anyone whose hatred isn’t pure, brutal, and absolute.
The interesting thing will be, will he backtrack in the ensuing borborygmus, or will the Right further fragment itself?

I think this is just a way to get publicity for himself. I really don’t think he cares all that much about the kids. this strikes me as the same sort of publicity hounding that Ann Coulter or Limbaugh would do. It’s not really about aid to kids. If he really cared he’d do it quietly and anonymously.

They are here; they are here now; the problem is ours now. I think we have had a hand in creating the crisis through a combination of nativist xenophobia, particularly strong in the conservative movement, in the implementation of our insane war on drugs and a long history of political and covert military interference in Central America. Oh, I never said it was “illegal immigration”

I’m convinced that Beck wants to be a martyr.
The thing is, whether it’s a ploy or not, this is an instance of how demeaning so much Christian charity is (and not only Christian of course). “Oh you poor unfortunate beings, even though you are illegals and have no right to anything, I, out of the goodness of my pure heart, am going to HELP you.” Now it is better to do something good out of a bad motivation than to do nothing at, but it’s hard to heap too much praise on such an act.
