Discussion: Giuliani: NYPD Should Not Turn Their Backs On De Blasio

Discussion for article #231501

“I do believe Mayor de Blasio should apologize to the New York City police department…he created an impression with the police that he was on the side of the protesters.”

First, the Mayor is under no obligation to apologize for the hallucinations of a loudmouth minority of belligerent authoritarian fascists concerned that they’re being reined in.

Second, it’s longstanding policy that we don’t negotiate with terrorists.

Wow, when even Rudy thinks the police officers didn’t look good with this stint, you know they’ve gone too far.

Rudy still thinks it’s all de Blasio’s fault of course for any misunderstandings.

Shut the FUCK up, Rudy.

Bill deBlasio owes NO ONE an apology, least of all you, for the common sense comments he made when it came to his son.

Right , so many commenters disagreed with this happening ; Rudy has realised he dropped himself into it . He’s now trying to get the votes back .

Why should the Mayor apologize for expressing the sentiment that he understands the protestors viewpoint? How does that in any way undermine the good cops? It’s ridiculous to try to stretch that into an indictment of the entire dept. Complete political grandstand maneuver to try to imply that is the Mayor’s position.

The cops also resent the fact that De Blasio mentioned his son Dante as typical of one of the young black men who might find himself in the the path of some belligerent cops. Rudi encouraged the disrespect the cops showed by turning their backs, and he can’t walk it back.

It looks like Giuliani realized that he really stepped in by encouraging the NY police in their disrespectful actions.

Dear Clueless Rudy,

Of course he’s ‘on their side’.
They’re NYC citizens.
He’s their mayor.

And why is wrong for the mayor to be on the side of the protesters?

I have repeatedly asked people who share the opinion that de Blasio is accountable for the murders of Liu and Ramos to quote the line or lines which instigated the killing, and, of course, there is no such quote for them to cite. This is a fantasy incited by Patrick Lynch of the PBA as red meat for cops who have hated de Blasio ever since his campaign focused on police reform. It’s fine for cops to have a different political opinion than members of the public (who elected de Blasio with an overwhelming majority) but just stop the petulant lying about what he’s said or done.

Which is more disgusting to me than any part of this entire terrible mess. Starting from him campaigning on repealing stop and frisk, and current contract issues there seems to have been little love for the Mayor from that side. PBA seems to be pissed off with the Mayor solely because he doesn’t want to let them overstep.Which is unsettling, because if you want everyone to laud you simply because of the job you have, you’d think one would be all for rooting out the bad apples and repairing community relations.

What do you suppose would happen if an African American stopped by the NYPD turned his back on the Police in the middle of a stop as a form of protest?

The critics of the NYPD were asked not to protest until after the funerals of the two police officers murdered.

It appears now that was so the NYPD would be the only ones protesting that day.

This is what we are dealing with.People who demand respect and their constitutional rights of free speech, then turn around and advise people who pay their salaries is to shut up and deal with it. You can file a complaint (that will be promptly thrown in the trash) after I have violated your rights. What’s the point of having constitutional rights if the Police refuse to respect them?

People of all colors need to talk to each other. That includes the Police. Especially the Police. If you have many thousands of people saying the same thing, then that discussion needs to happen. I understand that there is a lot of politicalization of race relations. The Republican party has made dog whistle racism, fear of the black (and brown) man, a cornerstone of their strategy since the extremely un-American and extremely slimy Lee Atwater concocted the “southern strategy” decades ago - now put on steroids to try and sideline our President. And Democrats have allowed over the top cries of racism at every turn to become part of the party meme. But facts are facts, and there is still a lot of racial inequality in this country. I am white, and I know from personal experience that racism exists all around me, and leads to discrimination and contempt, which then certainly leads to inequality. I urge the black community to continue to build on their new strategy of peaceful protests to help make the conversations happen. But please, be wise with whom you select to lead those conversations. Although I do believe that many of the old leaders have valid points and hearts in the right place, there needs to be a new group of leaders. The same people, saying the same things, in the same way, will not result in a different conversation. And we need new white leaders as well. Like this police chief, who understands diversity is reality, and that justice means following the spirit of the law. This country has stood as a beacon of freedom and opportunity for centuries, slowly but surely moving forward, but we can do more. We must reject racism. It is learned behavior, and it can be un-learned. I should know, I did it.

Sounds like the polls are in and the RWNJ’s are trying to back track~big time.

Lying is all they have. The police are digging their own grave by taking this stance.

They should, as all of us should, turn their backs on and cover their ears toward Giuliani…

I seem to recall that the police rioted against Giuliani when he was mayor…
“It doesn’t matter if you like the mayor or you don’t like the mayor,
you have to respect the mayor’s position. I don’t support that.”
Curious. Exactly the OPPOSITE of what he said in the aftermath of 9/11/2001 when he was mayor - “Don’t you dare disagree with ME!!”

Being a borderline fascist authoritarian means not countenancing symbolic displays of disrespect to authority by the police. These cops should instead have put that energy into planning a coup.
