Nobody should give a shit what Newt thinks. He’s a failed politician. The voters have repeatedly rejected him and his ideas. He lives on cable news treading water off his former position as Speaker of the House, which is the type of honorific abuse that we fought a revolutionary war over. Even on the off hand where he is actually correct, Newt needs to be ignored.

whew! - For a very brief moment I was worried that Newt had unaccountably gone full-reasonable. But anyone who thinks Trump is handling NK well is reassuringly insane, so this is probably just a matter of professional courtesy to the Solons of the World’s Greatest Deliberative Body, and not a sudden eruption of common sense.

Where Newt messed up was he never realized the Republican base never wanted a smart man. Whether it was a genuinely smart man like Obama or their idea of a smart man like Newt. What they wanted was a man as stupid as them. Preferably stupider. And they got that in Trump.
