Discussion: German Parliament OKs National Minimum Wage

Discussion for article #224645

$11.60 is still chump change, even in Europe. Living minimum wage, or quit. No one who is currently rich will not be any less so. Quite the opposite.

Nice to see Ms. Merkel finally smell the coffee about austerity but now, please cue the ā€˜Greekā€™ chorus to emanate from the wallow on the Potomac about socialism.

could someone ask merkel to call boneheaded boehner for me.

There is a national minimum wage in the US, in fact it is the only minimum wage in a number of States, it just isnā€™t high enough to actually live off of.

There goes the one of the last bastions that the GOP and ā€œconservativesā€ love to point to in trying to defend their attacks on the min. wage.

Huh? The Federal min. wage (which is the floor for all the states is $7.25 per hour, and has been at that level since July 24, 2009.

While (and many others) would agree that is too low (and hasnā€™t even kept up to inflation over the years) but it does exist.

Even in Europe? Europe, Germany in particular, is considerably more expensive than the 'States.

I might add I am stunned that their was no minimum wage in Germany before this. Of course, their unions are much more powerful than here and probably served to keep wages up much more effectively than here. I wish this story would tell us what percentage of the German workforce would actually get a raise under this new minimum wage.
