Discussion for article #242765
Those men want to adopt? Not in red states, I say!
And their shirts give the impression they are with the Red Cross!
If that’s a salute, it’s the laziest damned salute I’ve ever seen.
The ACLU representing the KKK…hmmmmmmmmm.
Love the laid-back heil salute…
This is not the first time the KKK has wanted to “adopt a highway”, and as I’ve always believed, they should get what they want.
And that section of highway will then be the designated mile (or whatever it is) for folks to dump whatever garbage they like. It would be a perfect testimony to the KKK (who would also be responsible for the clean up, which comes along with being the “sponsor” of that section of highway per those agreements).
TPM spoke with Harley Hanson, the Grand Cyclops of the Georgia group.
The Grand Cyclops?
hahahaha
This will be the official Doggie (poop) Bag drop-off for the region.
I’m from GA, hate the KKKlowns, but think they’re right on this one that they should have the same ability to adopt a highway mile as anyone else… and indeed give us a place to dump our white (segregated!) trash.
There is no legitimate basis for the state to deny their application. The ACLU always supports constitutional rights, even for unsympathetic clients. That is what constitutional rights are, for everyone, even people you don’t like.
No true progressive/liberal would approve of any group, even the KKK, being excluded. Only people who use progressivism/liberalism as a team color.
If you can’t accept that, maybe you should go join the GOPers, I understand they are pretty tolerant of authoritarians over there.
I can support free speech for haters even though I strongly disagree. I’m not sure I can support free speech for inciting violence though. Still not entirely sure on this one, although I love the idea of letting them have it and then dumping all your trash there =)
I did like reading this line:
The ACLU filed a lawsuit on the KKK’s behalf
I bet they were all a little surprised to be working together. Now if only congress… never mind.
Agreed. Free speech is free speech. It’s not without various boundaries, but in this instance it’s clear the Klowns should have the same right that everyone else does.
I went thru a stretch of Missouri, outside of Branson, several years ago. Their local KKK chapter adopted a portion of the highway. Was a pretty strange sight to see… but this is nothing new, I’m afraid.
I agree that free speech is free speech, but I can’t help but wonder how long it will take after they adopt that mile-long stretch for them to start “monitoring” it with armed guards and harassing certain people for “trespassing”…
Except that just a few months ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Confederate license plates were a form of government speech – as opposed to strictly individual speech by the person who wants one for his car – and can therefore choose not to issue them. That same principle certainly would apply to highway signs that are placed and maintained by a state agency. Will the Georgia Supreme Court follow the Supremes’ reasoning on this? If they do, then the Kluxers are shit outta luck.
The adopt-a-highway signs routinely mention for-profit businesses, churches, and individual citizens/families. I don’t think a state will be able to credibly claim that it is state speech. It is more like a public record.
“It gives our members something to do every other month or so. Get out there and keep the roads clean.”
Yes. Nothing like relaxing by cleaning off some blacktop after a long day of bloodying black folk.
