Discussion: Georgia Renames Confederate Holidays On State Employee Calendar

I’m glad we, now, know what the GOP means when they say they have a “Southern Strategy”: which means cover up.

The bonfires would be awesome!

“Those so inclined can observe Confederate Memorial Day and remember those who died in that conflict.”

And the rest of the state can celebrate that the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.

We should declare every month Confederate Shame Month. There are many things to celebrate about the South; violent and traitorous insurrection to protect the heinous inhumanity of slavery is not among them.

Actually Sherman’s march began in November 1864, so maybe the new name for the November holiday should be “William Tecumseh Sherman Day.” (Parades optional.)

Not a huge step into modernity, but it’s a step

“Marching through Georgia” is really quite a catchy tune!

Condew: That’s a very good suggestion. People will take them at different times throughout the year, and the dates themselves, and what they originally stood for, will soon be forgotten.

The institutional celebration of the confederacy provides legislators with a handy tool to use to convince their constituents to accept laws that only benefit ALEC’s owners. For example, blowing the tops off mountains to get coal cheaper while destroying everything in the area is a good idea because “Those Damn Yankees and their environmental laws can go fry.” “Global Warming is just another Obama hoax.” And so on.

The political benefit of division extends to the national level too. Americans can feel that they are right about issues the Dixie folk fail to understand, like the effect of modern agricultural implements on the economic concept of slavery. Or all people should be allowed to vote. Any time there is a great division of ideas, politicians profit modestly while their owners suddenly find legal opportunities to keep a river of money flowing into their coffers.

If the folks in Dixie chose to be Americans too the South would bloom. And with a rising standard of living in the South, the rest of the nation would benefit too. Or. Imagine the effect of artificial intelligence on a population that still disbelieves the industrial revolution took place. Those cheap little robots are going to put a whole lot of people out of work. People with no resources had best learn to think.

No Longer Traitor Day sounds about right.
Some in the south are starting to get it but they’ll start another damned civil war if you mess with their paid holidays.
