Discussion: George Will: We Should Say 'Welcome To America' To Undocumented Minors (VIDEO)

Discussion for article #225594

A sane thought birthed as contrition for his rapey-talk?

The very serious people may take serious umbrage at this blatant display of…of…humanity.

And here we see the one actual true thing Will gets, and has always gotten, that makes him not like other conservatives: he gets that America is a transmittable meme, not a racial characteristic.

Other than that, he’s just another dime-a-dozen cocktail weenie chewing Beltway conservative who knows how to use the thesaurus feature in Word.

Well, that won’t win him any fans on the right. I doubt it gains him any on the left either.

Once in a while – just once in a while – Will comes through for us rationalists. For ex: When he learned that appx 18 factually innocent men had been sentenced to death he said it was time to abolish the death penalty. He was responding to a report by the Innocence Project.
So, what’s a mother to do?

Thousands of Ukrainians, for ex, came to the US in the 1950s.
Then there were the Hungarians. Nary a peep, but then they were white don’t ya know.

Excellent catch. I’m surprised nobody guffawed on panel.
That, from the most balanced, competent and fair of Fox dwellers.

Tactical contrarianism. Will is irrelevant to an American Right driven by xenophobic, AR-15-toting paleoliths. No one listens to him.

He’s just trying to get online headlines to justify his otherwise pointless presence on the TeeVee.

True. We weren’t quite so welcoming to the Vietnamese boat people in '75-'76, though, although we are now.

Will can be blinkered and tone deaf on a lot of subjects, but he’s no dummy. I’m really glad he put the issue in numerical perspective - everyone on the rabid right is screaming about 58,000 illegals, without comprehending that that’s about 0.02% of the US population…

Bear:

“Tactical contrarianism…”

Most perceptive, grasshopper. I must, however, agree with him on this issue, much as I’ve always disliked this hustler.
We’ve just not made much of a fuss over white immigrants from Europe.

Will is like John McCain, Joe Scarborough, and a tiny smattering of other GOPers: 95% of the stuff that comes out of their pie holes is arrant nonsense, but every once in a great while the stars align correctly and they say something that’s halfway sensible.

What alcohol induced crazed alternative universe have we fallen into that George Will is the voice of reason?

It was a lot easier to sneak into the US looking for sanctuary when you were a dancer/writer/athlete/etc fleeing from a Commie Country. It’s a lot harder when escaping from Narco-Fascism.

By 9am on Monday, he will “revise” his words.

They were taken “out of context”

“Twisted” his words were.

And even though we have the tape, for all posterity, that proves otherwise, he will be eventually forgiven.

He has his moments of sanity…and just when you think this guy could be reasonable he goes off on a road agreeing with some wingnut. At least he (and I am noticing other republicans) get it this time. If you continue to demonize and deport…its not helping with the Latino vote…now can someone explain this to President Obama???

When you’re more of a dishonest right wing hack than George Will, you really need to take a deep hard look at yourself.

George Will does have his moments. he also once said:

A defining attribute of a government is that it has a monopoly on the legitimate exercise of violence. That attribute is incompatible with the existence of private militias…

However, even recently, he has been a self proclaimed booster of the TeaParty. It will be interesting to see if they reward his thoughtful approach to policy by excommunicating him.

I’ve quoted it before, and I’ll quote it again:

“Even a blind pig finds an acorn if it roots around long enough.”
