Discussion: George W. Bush: Media Is 'Indispensable To Democracy'

That incident seems so quaint now. We never appreciated that W was actually on the sane spectrum. Political differences, sure, but sanity and patriotism was a given.

“I guess W forgot all about how Cheney planted false stories and then touted them on the Sunday shows.”

Or maybe he is taunting Donald ? “Amateur ! You saw, how we did, and learned absolutely nothing!”

I was not a fan of President Bush and his decision to get us into his war of choice in Iraq I consider the worst presidential decision of my lifetime.

However, I think he is a different man then when he began his presidency in 2000.

I’m glad he is being supportive of a free press when so many in his party aren’t. I know it is a low bar, but these are low bar times.

That was a thing of beauty. He’d leak a conversation to Judith Miller and go on Meet the Press to refer to it as gospel. It all worked fine until the Aspens started turning.

Trump already feels like a late stage second term scandal ridden lame duck to me. Like Nixon, like Reagan and W before him. And it’s a month in.

[/quote]Absolutely, the more I think about it the more the tactics seem similar, but W was not a racist person and they all did seem patriotic as you say.

Trump is in an entirely different class. If this stuff is true, and of course it is, Trump will wind up being recorded in history as a criminal enterprise that assumed control of the presidency.

cow, coopt, and subjugate the press… His presidency was the absolute nadir of American journalism.

Bush, Cheney, Rummy, and all the other malign creeps in that administration were bad enough, and their job was made even easier with the full maturation of the GOP’s propaganda organ, led by Roger Ailes and backed up with Rupert’s money.

Trump learned from W, you could say, if “learning” were possible for Trump. But the other thing this points to is that apparently the only way for R’s to win the presidency in the 21st c. is to bypass the popular vote.

It seems like in Trump we’re getting the worst of Nixon, Reagan, and W put together onto one s*** sandwich.

SPEAKING OF FREEDOM TO DISSENT, NOT EVERYONE LOVES PUTIN AS MUCH AS TRUMP DOES:

Thousands march in Moscow to remember murdered opposition leader Boris Nemtsov
Protest was largest opposition gathering since a similar memorial march held for Boris Nemtsov last year

Thousands of Russians marched through Moscow shouting slogans such as “Russia will be free!” and “Putin is war!” to mark two years since opposition leader Boris Nemtsov was gunned down outside the Kremlin.

WOW! W actually issued an indictment of right-wing news as being too polarizing to sustain and foster rational discussion of the issues that make democracy work! I can see some very visible cracks growing in the Republican machine that put T rump is power. Even the neocons are putting the country’s interests above the interests of raw, naked power and control. I’m sure Cheney doesn’t see things this way, but it is a big sign when W publicly says anything like this. Congress will now have to do their job, or risk being labeled unAmerican by their own party. This is very nice to see.

Throw in a good dose of Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Woo, and i think you’ve nailed it.

That’s what I wanted to think but maybe it was right/left and he just didn’t want to get into it…

Since Trump likes to be the best, he has decided to be the best of the worst.

In fairness to GWB, he is dumb.

No one on the left wants to hear GWB’s opinion but I, for one, welcome any voice from the right critical of the Trump administration. There are still a few on the right that will give him credence.

Worth a few minutes of your time to listen to Vox’s take on the difficulties for journalism to deal with an administration that lies.

I am now remembering the nightmare years from 2001-2009, and agree with the replies to my earlier post. There is no reason to forgive W for his horrifying tenure just because DT is starting out so much worse.
