Discussion: Gay Ala. Lawmaker Threatens To Out Colleagues' Affairs

Discussion for article #232518

Iā€™m sure Patricia Toddā€™s election and reelection is surprising to some TPM readers, but Birmingham is a large enough city that its most liberal legislative district is actually fairly liberal.

Thanks!

My comment was going to read, ā€œA gay woman was elected in Alabama!?ā€ Iā€™m not sure why people in big cities are mostly sane?

OOOOOoooooā€¦DO IT! DO IT! Donā€™t just threaten that shitā€¦DO IT.

Second OOOoooo today for me at TPM. First Morning Joke says something that almost makes sense in the reality-based world and now this. A two-fer Day!

Continueā€¦TPM. Its that or reduce your headlines to SNOWPOCALYPSE DOOMSDAY ABOUT TO HIT EAST COAST.

Donā€™t get me wrongā€¦I feel for you eastcoasters. Been thereā€¦But letā€™s not get fucking carried away or ahead of ourselves.

Politicians are already taking bows a bit prematurely I might add, preening for the cameras. Wait till the shit hits the fan before we decide how well you handled your fucking jobs.

And whereā€™s Chubby Checkers from NJ. Havenā€™t heard from him yet. Did he phone it in from Iowa???

Good to know thereā€™s at least some voters choosing sanity in Alabama over teh crazy.

And Caitlin McNeil uses the old abbreviation for Alabama. The post office doesnā€™t even go that route anymore. Almost thought she was a generation older. Had to check her pictureā€¦Nope. She looks young.

I remember when we all had to know Fla., Mich., Ark., Minn., Mass. etc. Now its a two letter thing.

As a 30-something I was taught and have memorized all the current two letter abbreviations, however I like to use the longer abbreviations where I can. I think itā€™s classy

Thanks! Iā€™ve traveled a bit in the south and Iā€™ve scolded people here for saying ā€œArr, let 'em secede next timeā€ and all because somebody there said or did something awful. There are all kinds of people in the south, there really are.

In other news, off-topic but thereā€™s no reference to it on TPM, the Kurds, who are awesome, have pushed IS out of Kobane. Thatā€™s quite a victory for decent, civilized human beings.

Classy. Yeah, I get that, sort of. Almost like cursive is now quaint, or soon will be I suspect. I spent my whole life perfecting my written cursive script. It was Calligraph-i-tastic. Nobody writes anymore, at least not like they used to, except for grocery and things to do lists. Itā€™s depressingā€¦but I do have the prettiest (classy?) grocery list in the aisle.

Iā€™m with you on cursive and hand writing in general. I find itā€™s a good thing to do for many things in life: short lists, long journals, letters to family and friendsā€¦ I say this as a 70wpm typer always in front of a computer - I really value hand writing certain things. My cursive has always been pretty poor quality as they only taught us it during a couple years of elementary school and I just didnā€™t embrace it. I did however practice and pick up block lettering as an pencil-paper-and-t-square architect would use. My grocery list is the most sterile and legible in the aisle

Actually, the two letter abbreviations are just the postal abbreviations. Most states all still have official longer ones: Mass. Miss. etc. Ohio, Iowa and Utah do not have longer abbreviations.

Ah-hah! I thought it was a postal thing. At least I had it half right. Thanks for the correction.

Now ya wanna talk area codesā€¦just kidding.
Better yet Zip codes with the new 4 digit bullshit.

Sorry Daveā€¦Iā€™ve had too much caffeine todayā€¦does it show?

LOL, that distinction reminds me of some of the bygone tactics of the personal anti-tax movement: ā€œder IRS uses illegial unrecognized state abbreviations therefore itā€™s a technical error and my taxes should be thrown out!!ā€

This would be awesome. However, whatā€™s the legality of this?

Popcorn time.

B-ham seem to be fairly liberal from the times Iā€™ve visited. My client there is (iā€™m pretty sure, like 99.9%) gay and the downtown is very college / hipstery. Had no idea they had a gay rep though, thatā€™s pretty cool.

They could sue, but that would mean that they would have to prove that she knew what she was saying was false. ā€œpeople sayā€ is good enough for Faux Not Really News, so sheā€™s pretty safe, I would think. One other problem, if they sue her, THEY have to sit for a deposition. remember what happened in the Clinton case when depo questions went awry.

Iā€™m very glad to see this. And of course amused as well. Because this brings back old memories and Iā€™ve seen it work.

Back when the conservative/Republican "family values} members of congress were trying to impeach President Clintion. And then Larry Flint of Hustler magazine fame started offering huge rewards for anyone who would come forward and tell about their affairs and sexual encounters with members of congress.

I canā€™t remember the actual number of congressman exposed but I do remember it was impressive to me at least and may have actually helped the Republicans start backing off.

So I think exposing glaring hypocrisy is always a great idea.

I do remember that 100% of the House Managers (the ones ā€˜tryingā€™ Clinton in the Senate) were having affairs.

Ah yes, this is how politics is done. Hold on to your gun powder and keep it dry until a hypocrite threatens you. I remember all those family values people at bible study. Boinking one another except for Sundays of course.

Good for her.
