I had an email communication with the local Democratic party leader who was attempting to put together the details of our booth at the local county fair in July. I wrote him the following:
Would suggest starting with the bullet points from the DNC website (there are about 20, pick a few) and then add some local relevant points.
Make them actionable. For example, Be inclusive doesn’t say anything. What does that mean? What is actionable about inclusivity? What does Clean Air or Fair Taxation mean? What is actionable about it? What will initiate conversation?
Will any of the gubernatorial candidates visit the stand? This is an election year to replace Scott. If we have none of our candidates there, the perception will be that none of the candidates care about western Wisconsin, which is what we have now. How does the Democratic party change that?
I looked at the GOP stand last year and understood why we have no presence in the area. Their booth was energetic; they had representation; there were young people there, they had actionable bullet points. I will say that more than one of our patrons asked us to dispose of the GOP propaganda, which was hopeful, because it means some folks are open to hearing our message, but we had nothing there to refute the GOP stand.
There was more than one person that came by saying that our main display about the local farms contaminating water was off-putting because some of those farms were represented at the fair. We take a stand without being accusatory and inflaming things.
We also need proper documentation against those that would accuse Tammy Baldwin of not helping the Tomah opioid situation - I am of the opinion that being Senator didn’t authorize her to write prescriptions, but that’s not something one can argue with. We need appropriate documentation to defend what she has done in that situation.
I worked the stand last year, but will be out of town that weekend, but keep me on the list for future work.
I then followed up with:
One more thing:
Please, please, please make no mention of the current President anywhere in the booth or literature. It is already clear that running against Trump alone convinces no one. Run against the policies of the current Congress and only this. Mention Trump and folks will stay away in droves and write the booth off as disgruntled losers.
