“No religion condones the killing of innocents…” he said, ignoring the seas of innocent blood and the mountains of innocent corpses piled up wherever religion has reared its ugly head.

And then the big follow-up, the big finish… “America, our endless blessings bestow an enduring burden. But as Americans, we welcome our responsibility to lead. From Europe to Asia – from the far reaches of Africa to war-torn capitals of the Middle East – we stand for freedom, for justice, for dignity. These are values that have guided our nation since its founding,” he said, revealing again his great capacity to bullshit himself and the nation. The spilled blood of the millions slaughtered by America and its proxies cries out - “Pfbbbbt!!”

Giving the middle finger to Assad, I see.

That makes me think you support and condone outfits like ISIS though I expect you don’t

Mr. President, for all of your good words and intentions expressed here, do not get suckered into supporting regime change in Syria.

Though imperfect, and ruling with an iron hand, the Assad governments of both father and son had given Syria and the entire region many decades of stability and peace among a very diverse blend of religious and cultural communitys. Many of these communitys represent minority populations within the ME region, and Syria had been a safe haven prior to the present troubles.

As violent attacks from ISIL/S rebels and other “moderate” Sunni rebel groups against them attest, replacing Assad with a Saudi-led, Wahhabi-inspired, Sunni Arab coalition will not bring “the values that we stand for – timeless ideals” to the diverse peoples of Syria.

Not sure how you reached that almost-conclusion, but no, I don’t support ISIS or ISIL or whatever the hell they’re called. They’re just the chickens coming home to roost, the ultimate result of Western policies in the region going back at least as far as the first World War.

I am glad I read Obama’s speech on ISIL before I watched it. Imagine having the opportunity to re-set our relationship with Iraq. I am worried that our next president will not be as savvy as Obama. The stealth with which the international community, including Russia, dispensed with chemical weapons in Syria was remarkable. It was a foreign policy coup that the press largely ignored. I would have predicted that we would be at war with Pakistan after we killed bin Laden in a raid in Abottabad under any other president, especially since Pakistan has nukes. But, Obama’s team seems to have found ways to pursue foreign policy goals without invading other countries. Imagine that!

I prefer Obama’s steady approach of consensus-building at home and abroad, humanitarian aid and sanctions, drones, airstrikes, and small forces of experts to work with the partner government. This multi-pronged strategy can be a model any other government can use to diffuse a threats in their own countries. I believe it will work, if McCain and Graham don’t take another junket to Syria for photo-ops.
