Discussion: French Official: 2 Americans Subdued Gunman Who Opened Fire On Train

Discussion for article #239672

I’m proud of these Americans for coming to the rescue. I suppose there’s some advantage to living in a gun-crazed culture such as ours: we respond instinctively to gun violence?

Hats off to the heroes! And to those who were injured, best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

First of all, this is clearly a fake story, because the only way to stop a bad guy…you know the drill.

Second, if Fox news reported that two Americans on a train in Europe showed clear evidence of “sangfroid” and that one of them had to be hospitalized, 7 red-state governors would demand that we close the airports and thousands of Americans would cancel plans to travel to Europe (also to Australia, Asia, South America, Canada, and Hawaii, just in case any of those places were in Europe).

NY Post is saying it was two U.S. Marines that subdued the gunman.

If true, boy did he pick the wrong train car to try this shit.

Based on the number of ammo clips the gunman had at the ready, it appears he planned to massacre a very large number of people. Those who stopped him prevented what would likely have been an absolute bloodbath.

It may have just been 2 people who suddenly learned that they would be brave in such a situation, but I don’t think it is unreasonable to wonder if the memory of the passengers in the plane above Pennsylvania on 9/11 flashed through the minds of the Americans when they realized what was going on.

Daily Mail saying one of the Marines is in critical condition. Gunman had nine magazines, containing nearly 300 rounds.

It’s BBC’s lead story. Evidently they heard the guy loading the rifle in a toilet and confronted him. Good guys without guns still managing to save God only knows how many lives.

Wait…but that’s not possible! Only good guys with guns can stop bad guys with guns!!! I’m so confused!!! Did the two Americans have a gun? Or were they the bad guys? How could they tell if they were good guys if they didn’t have a gun??? Was the bad guy the good guy? I mean, he had guns!!!

But seriously, folks, as opposed to the usual fantasy of good guys stopping armed attacks with their own arms, this shows unarmed people with the all-important situational awareness acting quickly and with determination to take a heavily armed person by surprise and subdue him. Simply having a firearm on your person is only one factor in the list of things that influence how these situations play out. Awareness, training, mindset, all the other factors, that’s what the ammosexuals downplay or just don’t know.

I propose “Freedom-blood” as a replacement for sangfroid.

“…without their sangfroid we could have been confronted with a terrible drama.”

Good ol’ American sangfroid

Why isn’t this bigger news?

I fully intend to be an insufferably jingoistic American for at least the weekend.

Sure glad there were a couple of good guys with guns on that train… Wait, they didn’t have any guns? Friggin’ French and their gun-free zones!

… and get shot here instead - where the odds of being murdered with a gun are multiple times higher.
