Discussion: Franken Accuser Says She Was Afraid To Speak Out At The Time

Has there been criticism of her for not speaking up before this?

Note to TPM editors: Franken is (D-MN), not (R-MN).
She told reporters that she accepts Franken’s apology for his behavior.

“There’s no reason why I shouldn’t accept his apology,” she said, adding later that Franken had an opportunity to apologize a couple years after the 2006 tour when she encountered her at a USO gala.

Tweeden was also asked if Franken should resign from the Senate.

“People make mistakes,” she replied. “I’m not calling for him to step down.”
Interesting.

No time for corrections! Must get the important news out before it grows stale!

“There were people around me who said, ‘Oh, my God, you will get annihilated and you will never work in this town again,’ and I was afraid of that. I really was afraid of that,”

Oh really? Well well, we have a growing list of witnesses to interview then, don’t we? First, all the people in the room, including the photographer. Next, these unnamed people who you reported to and can confirm that there were somewhat contemporaneous reports from you to others about the incidents. Anyone else we should be talking to, Ms. Birther?

There were people around me who said, ‘Oh, my God, you will get annihilated and you will never work in this town again,’ and I was afraid of that. I really was afraid of that,” she told the media on air after publishing her initial accusations."

I don’t believe this. Al Franken was not some powerful figure back in 2006. He was really in between careers. And if her goal was to become a Conservative media darling, why or how could an unapologetic liberal in anyway derail her career? Nobody said that to her.

What I want to know is what kind of hair enhancements she wears. Brazilian human hair or synthetic?

Anyone?

I’m tending toward synthetic myself.

How is it in the 24 hour news cycle we can only get coverage of one story at a time?

It’s the latest in auto-correct — you type “Senator” and “sexual assault,” and the word processor assumes “R.”

Am I the only one sensing an attempt to hedge?

What Al did was a dumb-fuck thing and if intended as a joke (I think it was) it was a low-quality stupid one. That’s one thing. But I have a feeling this may well blow up in her face… and she knows it.

Besides, as soon as I read that she was afraid to speak out, it sounded vaguely familiar. :smirk:

Yes going after a liberal comedian would destroy her job at Fox news, everyone knows how much power Al Franken has over at Fox news and how buddy buddy he is with their top TV host. The more she talks the less credibility she has IMO.

I also sensed some hedging when this became an imminent congressional investigation.

There’s another conservative radio host claiming that Franken “harassed” her in 2000 after they both appeared on Politically Incorrect (the irony is killing me). Melanie Morgan is her name, I believe. I’ll let you do the googling.

Afraid of WHAT? That she would not get any air time on “Air America”?

Al Franken was not a “powerful celebrity”. He was a guy who had been on SNL in the 80’s and a (relatively) unknown radio personality. In 2006 nobody cared WTF Al Franken did or said. Anywhere.

This whole thing smacks of a bought-and-paid-for accusation, ESPECIALLY the TIMING.

It is PERFECT for distracting the MSM while the TAX THE POOR bill is being voted upon.

I think the photographer and the person sitting next to her is going to come out with the truth. Also, in every picture taken with Franken she is smiling. If she was so scared of Franken why didn’t she just leave the show?? Also, if she didn’t want to do the sketch why did she do it anyway. She could have said she was ill and went home.

I’d encourage us to grant this person the same courtesy of accepting her claims as credible as (most) people have done with Roy Moore’s accusers, until/unless something comes to light that makes them less credible. “Our” side doesn’t get to retain the moral high ground here by doubting this woman’s story right out of the gate but not those of others.

The lede, at least now, reads: “Leeann Tweeden, the Los Angeles news anchor who accused Sen. Al Franken (D-MN)…”

What I want to know is how did Roger Stone know this story was going to break?
