Read my lips, no new taxes!
But when he raised taxes, nobody rioted, and nobody was killed. Say what you will about the deficiencies in America, until Trump, our Federal Government was relatively stable compared to most places in the world.
Without knowing the details in France, people generally hate taxes while at the same time want to live in a free, peaceful, prosperous, well maintained society. They want great schools, great infrastructure, high wages, low crime, and a wealth of public services…but don’t want to pay for any of it.
If only the US had leaders that tried to do things good for all.

The gas tax seemed to be most onerous because the price of gas for a gallon is around $6.00. I pay about $3.79 and it makes me nuts. But taxes are in fact necessary for a civilized society, paved roads, functioning infrastructure and fire and police departments, etc.
One lesson here is that if you want a thing to happen, getting out in the streets ( non-violently) will alert others to your position. We don’t do enough of it here, although France has a huge advantage there being so small.
I’ve seen a few $2.19 around Raleigh NC recently! Might be the stuff that’s high alcohol % though. Humm wonder if they can distill soybeans if the chinese don’t start buying now?
Edit: apparently yes. Although I didn’t realize they are also used for biodiesel.
Except it costs as much to make biofuel as you get out of it. It’s subsidized, and little more than a jobs program for AG States that grow massive amounts of corn.
mon dieu! postponing le football - where will it end?
also a rather good health care system
Good government lessons here would only be redundant.
There’s almost certainly a backstory here about which taxes are being raised and which aren’t. That, and russian-aligned thugs.
Interesting as seems like I read somewhere that Diesel invented the Diesel engine specifically for farmers to be able to run it off peanut oil and be self sufficient.
Actually googling a bit supposedly you can make it for quite a bit less, but that doesn’t include your time.

Googling a bit more and B20 is supposedly cheaper that straight D but maybe because of the subsidies you mention. I assume they justify subsidies for the current carbon cycle aspect.

Well, you just forced me to spend 25 minutes researching diesel engines and peanuts.
I could find no evidence to confirm that Diesel (and other that did work on early diesel engines) designed the engine for farmers to run on peanut oil. From just reading wiki, the first diesel powered tractor was built in 1922–9 years after his death.
And I now have a bit more useless information rattled around in my head. Thanks for that.
Sorry about that. Probably a mis-remembering and or mixing of remembrances. Interesting since I’m reading a book about the new testament and memory by bart ehrman.
Was more likely an article like this one saying farmers can grow their own fuel if they use diesel engines. And according to it, a fair number do in German and even cars.
