Discussion: Fox's Shep Smith Sorry For Saying Robin Williams' Death Was Cowardly

Discussion for article #226289

Probably the only FOX person to ever admit regret for something he/she said.

He thinks depression is just feeling really sad.

Depression is being so far down, you don’t know there is an up.

I’m willing to cut Shep some slack here. He said something he shouldn’t have said. He apologized for it. Fine with me.

And he seems to be about the only human being working at Fox News with even a hint of morality or decency.

Fox should have a segment every day called the Daily Apologies. It would consist of all the things rhey said that day that needed an apology.

In his defense, this sort of reaction might be seen as normal, a normal reaction to addiction. If only addiction made sense. In Smith’s position as a journo he might want to get educated, but he is voicing what a lot of normal people think. Addiction is a great tragedy, in part because of how addicts are judged and how they judge themselves. This is why people kill themselves.

The meetings are anonymous for a reason. One reason famous people are discouraged from identifying publicly is they become poster children if they relapse, spreading the myth that recovery is impossible.

Well at least he admitted he was wrong.

But to say that stupid remark in the first place, proves this guy never has had or knows no one that suffers from depression of this severity!!

Until you experience mental health issues yourself or through a loved one, I don’t think you realize how little control you have over your thoughts and emotions and how much they are the chemical reactions in your brain.

It’s the fact that it appears he did this on his own that makes me give him a pass.

We should all ignore FOX news.

If you live into your 60s with severe depression and you’re an incredibly successful artist, and I mean artistically successful, on top of it, I’d guess you have far more courage than average.

But Shep Smith is the conscience of that outfit and I’ll cut him some slack. It’s a slip, not a pattern.

Emotional disorders are extremely difficult for people who never experienced them to understand. Robin Williams was not in control of how he was feeling about himself, his brain chemistry was,and it was not
working properly

Insensitive, spiteful remarks like this one by Republicans are why they’ve lost so many moderates in the last 15 years and are not gaining any new supporters to replace them.

Dancing on the grave of the deceased is a time-honored behavior of the “good people” who have denied those who took their lives a decent burial in cemeteries for centuries. It’s the same conservative “principle” that demands that they deny gay people funerals in their “Christian” churches.

How depraved can they get before this reign of hatred and prejudice stops? Continue to watch Faux News and you’ll find out. It’s the propaganda wing of the GOP.

I’m not cutting him ANY slack. Smith is constantly hounded by gay rumors. I wonder why is that? Could it be that he IS gay and is hiding it. He has a lot of gall calling someone a coward.

I saw footage from World’s Greatest Dad in which he said, “Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems.”

I guess for him his problems weren’t ever going to go away. So sad for his family and friends who have to go on without him. Can’t imagine.

I’m fine with that, in context I can kinda see where he was coming from. And he’s clearly sorry for it coming out the way it did.

Typical Fox News retorting…say stupid shit…walk it back the next day

Compassion and conservative don’t go hand-in-hand.

I sometimes think that best comedians get so close to the truth at times when they are analyzing the human condition that they get burned by it. Williams only made us laugh when he wasn’t making us cry.

I will miss him so much and I never even met him. May the good Lord hold him in His arms and rock dear Robin to a everlasting and most wonderful peace…one that he was denied in this world.
