I often find myself wondering whether what purpose he serves in Ailes’ conception of the network’s propagandizing mission. I have a feeling it’s pathologically cynical, but I can’t get my head sufficiently into that space to suss it out.

Shep Smith is not a blind squirrel, he’s on the right side of almost every important issue.

C’mon, you’re a smart guy. He is there for Ratings. Period. His ratings are great. He has great presence.
Not from his producers, his ratings are sky high. Maybe from some FOX talk show hosts, but all that does is boost ratings for all the shows.
“political” is a veil for; pulling the latter up, when I’m done climbing.
Shep does a decent job of being a rational voice in an infotainment channel full of batshit-crazy lunatics.
Now granted, those same batshit-crazy lunatics are the ones who pretend that everything they dislike is “political.” Caring what wingers think is really like asking a schizophrenic about their feelings and taking the answer at face value. People who are intolerant, bigoted and dumb all around can call something “political” and it means either the opposite - or, in many cases, it means nothing at all. Like most of what right wingers say.
