I think our problem is that G.W. Bush debranded us as a moral beacon in the world. it’s not clear that America stands for much more than capitalism to most countries any more. (ok, maybe Hollywood too. violence and testosterone?)

I think that when I tire of working for a living, I’m going to find a street corner somewhere, spout the most insane shit I can think of, and hope that some Fox drone (the “human,” non-airborne type) hears me, and they offer me a job as an expert commentator. Maybe I’ll have to tell them I’m a doctor (or play one on the street corner), to give me more “legitimacy.”
I swear, Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes have proved themselves to be in the top five of America-destroyers.

Amidst the crazy, a grain of truth. There was, in fact, a recent president who “took away the notion of what it meant to be American, for some number of people, [who took away a part of them, a sense of patriotism, forward momentum[.]” It wasn’t Barack Obama.
I remember experiencing precisely that feeling between 2002 and 2006 as those who set aside their misgivings and supported the president in a time of crisis were betrayed again and again by an Administration that wiped its ass with our nation’s ideals, started a war based on a fake causus belli and used a foreign threat as a political theater cudgel.
Of course, I didn’t join ISIS as a result.
