Discussion: Fox News Had Its Own GOP Debate Agenda: Narrow Down The Field

Discussion for article #239183

Unfortunately wasn’t able to enjoy the circus without a cable subscription. Surprised Faux didn’t even allow streaming. We’ve gotten to a sad state where Faux 1) Picks the candidates 2) Steers the debate to highlight its choice candidates and 3) Locks out viewers who aren’t paying customers. What a system!

I followed the debate through Ed’s Live Blog on Washington Monthly. Even by Fox News standards it seems like an incredibly biased performance by the network. Did Governor Christie get any questions about Bridgegate? Were Mr. Rubio’s apparently shaky finances brought up? Did anyone mention that the ‘star’ of the Happy Hour debate was responsible for laying off 30,000 people, etc.? I wonder if Mr. Trump is willing to wage all out war against Fox: that would certainly be fun to watch!

Seems like #3 kinda undermines the effectiveness of #2, as it reduces the potential audience for their propaganda. On the other hand, old people sitting on their couches flipping through the channels on overpriced, advertising-saturated 1001-channels-of-bullcrap-nobody-really-watches cable tv packages IS pretty much the prime target audience for both Fox and the GOP candidates.

Just waking up here in lovely Bavaria. Did I miss anything? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Personally, I’m happy for the GOP to annoint an unvetted nominee.

Excellent summary of what I was able to glean from my television, which digitally cut out every 2 minutes. Fuck You Comcast. Ed Kilgore offers a very insightful perspective on what this Faux News debate reveals about the Republican/Faux News/RNC process of elimination. They report, they decide…and all you old farts out there that watch Faux News…they’ll tell you what to think and when to think it, too.

I heard Larry Sabato say the other day that essentially the RNC has turned to Faux News to whittle down the contenders because they don’t want to be responsible for the bad blood between the numerous candidates, and what will probably result from each of their dejected rightwing constituencies. If the RNC made those decisions outright, they’d later have to accept the blame for the results. One thing Prince Rebus is incapable of doing, is accepting responsibility for anything that goes wrong on his watch. So it does seem plausible that the RNC wants Faux to do most if not all of the heavy lifting for them, deciding which candidates will rise to the top, and which ones should sink to the bottom, by appearing to do so by their own volition.

The RNC has essentially outsourced the entire process, abdicating their official role in subservience to Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes, and perhaps other rightwing media outlets. I can now see how that played out tonight in some ways by the very specific questioning of the various candidates by the moderators.

Much to Murdoch’s dismay there are a number of free streaming options if you want to punish yourself to watch Fox.

Just remember you’d be angering Murdoch and Ailes if you went to a site like Reddit or something and got the links to free Fox streams and no one wants to see Ailes angry (he turns a pinkish hue and gets rather gassy)

I agree with pretty much all of this analysis. They did everything besides have Megyn kelly walk up there in her miniskirt and pumps and throw a drink in Trump’s face.

Fox’s agenda was clear–rig the “debate” to pump up Kasich and destroy Trump. Looking at the comments on such cesspools as Drudge, Red State, Free Republic, BreitFART and Fox News–looks like they failed.

I could see this format and questioning actually pumping up Trump’s numbers in polls. Folks might start feeling sorry for his being unfairly targeted? The rigged system is apparent here to me, and I’d guess to millions of others. The fact that Donald handled this b.s. as well as he did will impress many people.

It only makes sense, as Republican leadership has fallen to conservative media.

Kasich sounded way too compassionate for the GOPer crowd. They’ll doom him in good time. He was so Tea Party-esque when he ran for Gov, hardly sounded like the same man last night.

Final word on this whole FUBAR FUX Noise GOPig Klown’ Show comes from Political Pundit Kitty…who never gets it wrong.

I’m not sure what that freak show was last night (both of them), but it sure as hell wasn’t a “debate”.

Now that would be must-see teevee.

And if theDonald sticks around we might just get to see it!

Admittedly, I’m a novice to politics (I only really started paying attention around 2012). But this was among the most shameful things I’ve ever seen on Television. And that’s even by Fox News standards.

I mean, I’ve watched The Daily Show for about 15 years, so I’ve always been aware of the hypocrisy. But I’ve never seen them quite like this. From the opening moment to the bitter end, they had one goal in mind: destroy Trump and allow somebody else (Bush) look presidential.

Kasich did pretty good, but I think they went easy on him because 1) They know he can’t win, and 2) they knew he had a homefield advantage and didn’t want to anger the crowd.

I think the real guy they were trying to pump up was Bush. The only question they threw at him that was even remotely critical was about common core, and he seemed to be well-prepared for that answer. Everybody else (except Walker) they talked about their poor track records, flip flops they’ve made in policy, and/or media stumbles/gaffes.
