Near as I can tell, they’re not mocking her for her military service. They’re mocking her for being the first female fighter pilot (active combat duty) in a Muslim country.

Which I think we can all agree is a pretty fucking impressive first.

I honestly can’t remember, does the USA have female combat pilots yet?

Yes the US has female combat pilots. The first was Col Jeannie Leavitt. The first to fly in combat was Col Colonel Martha E. McSally, in the first Gulf War. Leavitt was the first woman to command a US fighter wing and McSally was the first to command a squadron.

Of course that’s a matter of opinion but the better class of puns rely on double meanings of words or similar-sounding words, so they work both ways. This was based on the first three letters of the five-letter words involved, and the ground wasn’t involved at all—it really doesn’t work. There’s no arguing taste but it’s a pretty weak, forced attempt at humor IMHO.

If she were truly embarrassed or offended, she could have replied that the comments were inappropriate. In fact, she would have felt compelled to do so. She didn’t - you are giving her WAY too much credit.
