With respect to the Ferguson police department’s heavy-handed interactions with the news media, it seems that they regard the protections provided by the U.S. Constitution as – to quote a line from a famous movie – “mere guidelines”.
The police expect to be treated with respect, but how do they expect to get respect from people whom they treat disrespectfully? Giving an obviously phony answer like that when someone you are arresting asks for your name is more than disrespectful, it is contemptuous. If you don’t want to give your name, you could at least give your badge number.

Freedom of expression is not dependent on “values”. Your version of “reporting in tune with certain values” was very very popular with a certain Joseph Gobbels back in Germany in 1933-1945.
Facts are facts and are independent of any political value you may ascribe to them.
One more thing “End”, those who incited violence in Ferguson over these past days are not the media.
EndTheNightmare has 28 years to think about what s/he has done before responding.

Well at least they aren’t being beaten senseless or beheaded as in Iraq. Capt. Johnson has a very difficult job on his hands and he clearly is doing far better than anyone from Ferguson PD.
