Discussion: Former Rep. John Dingell, Longest Serving Member Of Congress, Dead At 92

Nearly all the legends from that bygone era are gone now. His second calling as a twitter master was absolutely remarkable. A real loss for the nation.

Dingell should be Case #1 for everyone that ever considered term-limits.

Dingell was first elected in 1955, to fill the House seat vacated by his late father. The family tradition continued when his wife, Debbie, was elected to replace him in his Detroit-area district after he retired in 2014.

That is one House Seat controlled by one family for over 85 years.

A good, full life with the intent and outcome of helping people.
He will be well-remembered and remembered well.
Rest In Peace, John.

Damn. He was a wonderful, brilliant, hilarious, witty, and just all around great public servant. I wish him safe travels to the great beyond. May he forever rest in power.

A giant whose stellar career and character stand even taller next to the likes of Trump, Ryan, and McConnell.

They just don’t make 'em like Big John anymore…

For some peculiar reason, in listing his legislative record this AP obit omits the law he considered his most important vote:

Thanks to @sniffit for the link; and as he said when he posted it earlier, Dingell either lays in state in the Capitol or we should riot.

His proficiency with Twitter in his later years shows that it’s not how old you are, it’s how old you think. John Dingell was always a young smartass (and just plain SMART) at heart.

RIP, good sir. Thank you for your service to our country.

I hope there are still some out there like this giant of a man.

Godspeed & White Light John.

Sometimes, thankfully, the good manage to die old. His legacy is a testament to life lived in service to something greater than one’s self and a debt we cannot repay, only strive to emulate.

RIP, Twitter Jedi.

Unforgivably shameful that people are missing it.

In a “good” way, or a “bad”? I don’t see a like on the post, so I’m going to guess “bad”. If I’m wrong, I apologize in advance. If I’m right, then, well, I construe the post as “term limits are stupid, and the Dingells are Exhibit 1 as to why.” If that’s the meaning, I agree. But I could be wrong.

Prayers to Rep. Debbie Dingell and the rest of the Dingell clan.

Was surprised to discover this:

the resignation of Reagan’s first environmental protection chief and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch’s mother, Anne Gorsuch Burford. She stepped down after refusing to share subpoenaed documents with a House subcommittee investigating a Superfund toxic waste program.

So, Gorsuch has had it out for Congressional oversight since his mom pulled a Kim Davis.

I’d say to his family that I’m sorry for their loss, and for ours. People with that kind of courage are stepping up, but we’re going to need all there is out there. My gratitude to the public servants who came before and showed the way. We won’t let you down, sir.

I will do what I can to make sure more Dems get elected in 2020, in his honor. That is what he deserves, along with people on TPM doing the same.
