Discussion: Former President George HW Bush Dies At 94

R.I.P.

I didn’t agree with his politics, but he understood the gravitas of the Presidency. The last Republican who did.

There passes a President who can be justly proud of his life.

Plenty that one could fault him for, I suppose, but for tonight, as he almost said…

Not the time for this comment, but here it goes:

I wonder what Fat Donnie will do to fuck this up?

Go to sleep. When you wake up tomorrow morning, you will find out.

The last of the decent Republicans, I voted for him in 1988, the last republican I have voted for. (I would have voted for him 1992. and for Son W in 2000, but was living abroad) However because of W and Cheney and republicans in congress, screwed it for me, and I have not voted for a single republican since I came back to the US in 2004.

Rest In Peace, Sir.

He wasn’t perfect, no one is, and I didn’t agree with his politics, but he gave great service to this country, from being a Naval aviator through the presidency. He was a Republican you could respect.

We can only hope he learned something from his disgraceful reaction to McCain’s death.

Oh, who am I kidding …

Bummer. He was a decent man, no chickenhawk he. The country would be a better place if we had more republicans like him.

Bush Sr. on Bonespurs: “I don’t like him. I don’t know much about him, but I know he’s a blowhard.”

That is all.

Donnie has released a respectful statement. I’m sure he didn’t read it, much less write it, but one of his speech writers did a good job.

@irasdad Brian Williams just told a story about how, even though 41 was raised with great privilege, his mother insisted he be self-effacing. She lectured him about the evils of “the great I am” and how one should not talk about one’s self. What a contrast to the current occupant.

Obama remembers George HW Bush: 'A patriot and humble servant’

A comment on Facebook re the tribute Obama gave to Bush: I bet $2O that Capt. Cheeto will speak 2 sentences about Bush and then a sentence about himself.

The nation would be different if Bush won in 1980 instead of Reagan…Bush understood the dangers of Reagan’s economic plans, and he wouldn’t have run up the same kinds of deficits. He also wasn’t a fan of the evangelicals, so might have been able to slow their takeover of the Republican party. The party itself may have made more progress towards equality and liberalism…Bush definitely kept it centrist, and would not have allowed any of the things he had to clean up from Nixon. He wasn’t perfect, for sure, but he was far better than the Republicans were moving towards, and better than the crop we have now.

And, no matter what you might think of his policies, you can’t doubt that he served the nation well, and tried to do what he thought was best for it. That’s all you can hope for nowadays, and far more than we get from most politicians.

I assume he is not welcome, but has it been announced?

Everyone is talking about him because he died. I prefer presidents who don’t die.

While many things about George H.W. Bush’s political positions and legacy I disagree with, he was a loyal American and served loyally during WWII.
