McConnell did this because he needed Trump to be elected. If Hillary won, and nominated a SCT justice more liberal than Merrick Garland, McConnell would look like a complete idiot for having blocked Garlandâs nomination. This was pure self-interest.

The answer is sitting on the Supreme Court: Justice Gorsuch. McConnell did everything he could to get a conservative majority on the Court, even if it meant electing Trump.

Remember, that Turtle blocked Garland looked like an entirely stupid move on his part, because it would have been indeed stupid in normal circumstances.
