Discussion: Former Nuke Weapons Officer Goes Off: Trump Is 'So Damn Dangerous'

There really needs to be some kind of ad showing this combined with pointing out Trump not understanding why we don’t use nuclear weapons.

I can recall that there was much research into replacing the images in these grizzly pictures with bombs that would kill everyone, but leave the infrastructure untouched. Can’t remember how the people died. I do wonder whatever happened to that premise, since they certainly haven’t replaced the nuclear deterrent.

I am always confused by the term “casualty”. I always forget that it includes wounded who are unable to function as soldiers. I’m sure you are correct. Nonetheless, the toll of casualties at 50K, and dead at 20K, was extremely high for the small island, and led US war leaders to look for something to terminate the war.

Indeed. Never forget. But never forget WHAT??

I never forget Nanjing. 300,000-500,000 killed (in other words, 2x-3x as many as Hiroshima+Nagasaki). Women raped. Children murdered for failing to show respect to Japanese troops.

Today, many Japanese STILL refuse to acknowledge this horrible atrocity.

From the wikipedia:
"Denials of the massacre by public officials in Japan
In May 1994, Justice Minister Shigeto Nagano called the Nanjing Massacre a “fabrication”.[117]

On June 19, 2007, a group of around 100 Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmakers again denounced the Nanjing Massacre as a fabrication, arguing that there was no evidence to prove the allegations of mass killings by Japanese soldiers. They accused Beijing of using the alleged incident as a “political advertisement”.[118] [119]

On February 20, 2012, Takashi Kawamura, mayor of Nagoya, told a visiting delegation from Nanjing that the massacre “probably never happened”. Two days later he defended his remarks, saying, “Even since I was a national Diet representative, I have said [repeatedly] there was no [Nanjing] massacre that resulted in murders of several hundred thousands of people.”[120][121] On April 1, 2013, Kawamura said his position remained unchanged when the issue came up during an election debate.[122]

On February 24, 2012, Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara said that he also believes that the Nanjing massacre never happened. He reportedly claims it would have been impossible to kill so many people in such a short period of time.[123] He believes the actual death toll was 10,000.[124]

On February 3, 2014, Naoki Hyakuta, a member of the board of governors of Japan’s public broadcasting company, NHK, was quoted as saying the massacre never occurred.[125] He said that there were isolated incidents of brutality but no widespread atrocity, and criticized the Tokyo Trials figure of 200,000.[126]"

And Nanjing was only one of many atrocities during the Greater East Asia Coprosperity Sphere. The Japanese are owed NOTHING as to our appropriate war actions. The Japanese STILL owe the world an admission of their great cupability in the uncountable number of atrocities which they committed for 15 years. The japanese are responsible for the deaths of millions - 3-10 million, from 1931-1945.

They deserved the bombing.

But of course, Saturday, Aug 6, will remain American Humiliation Day, in which we apologize to the Japanese for the great harm we caused them in WWII. It’s absolutely appalling that we participate in this day of national humiliation and abnegation.

As with everything, YMMV. I’ve been to Socorro Springs but I still prefer the Buckhorn. The burgers are good, but the brewpub lacks the funky ambience of the Buckhorn.

Besides, San Antonio can use the economic support.

Doctor Strangelove should be added to the viewing list, but only with an extended discussion of the script-writing process. Kubrick was trying to make a movie of Red Alert, an apocalyptic thriller that was well-reviewed by experts in game theory. In the writing, though, Kubrick wasn’t able to keep it serious, because the shared insanity of mutually assured destruction kept making things darkly comic. He couldn’t keep the movie serious without eliminating those aspects, but he couldn’t eliminate those aspects and do justice to the story.

In the end, he decided to make Doctor Strangelove a black comedy. It’s funny as hell (one of my favorite movies, in fact) but comedy provides a mirror to our behavior and beliefs that drama doesn’t. In its way, Strangelove is as disturbing a vision as On the Beach and (for me) more disturbing than Fail Safe.

Thanks for that perspective. I’ll have to revisit it now with a fresh eye. It is certainly a time for dark humor.

She is the perfect candidate…don’t know WHAT i was thinking!!
