Discussion: Former GOP Officials Call For Carbon Tax To Replace Clean Power Plan

Weren’t the Republicans vehemently opposed to a Carbon tax during Obama’s terms? I didn’t keep track closely, but I think this is a complete turnaround, is it not?

Well, those who are in office who could lose the money given to them by the rich people who own oil wells would rather die than push for anything that remotely helps the environment. On the other hand, Baker has the courage that comes from not being in office and not having to worry what the Koch Brothers and their cohorts think.

A group of former Republican officials will propose a plan to the White
House to put in place a carbon tax in an effort to stave off climate
change

Note the word former.

Every Republican elected official from Trump on down KNOWS that climate change is real and a threat. Since being out of office seems to suddenly give them the courage to say so, my plan is simple-get them ALL out of office.

I support a carbon tax with offsetting income tax credits as the best solution. It has worked in British Columbia and would work in the US.

Ohhhh…the hubris is deep here…‘We hated that damn tax when the Kenyan was running things but NOW we kinda think we need one imposed…’

The proposal from the Republicans would also protect fossil fuel companies from lawsuits charging that they hurt the environment, the Times reported.

My cynical side says this is the real purpose of this measure.

Baker said that Ronald Reagan may have backed the plan.

“I’m not at all sure the Gipper wouldn’t have been very happy with this,” he told the Times.

I totally agree. However, the goal is SO important that if they actually did it, I would forgive their hypocrisy. But they won’t of course, because Grover Norquist would have a heart attack even if it were revenue neutral.

The ‘O’ in GOP stands for ‘oil.’ Former senior GOP statesmen who did little to nothing to curb our oil fetish while they had power and influence have no sway here.

I sure don’t like the tort reform spoken about in this article. Protecting companies from lawsuits, after it is clear that they damaged the environment does nothing to balance burden the damage does to the public or the citizens of the US. The effects of oil spills and gas leaks can take decades to recover from this, lawsuits keep these companies aware of the risks and the penalties for cutting corners or avoiding regulations. Do we seriously want to deal legislate favors to industry that doesn’t need it. Last time I checked ol’ exxon, shell, bp and others were doing just fine by their shareholders despite the fact that the barrel price of oil has stayed around 50-60 dollars for years.

I just don’t understand why exxon and other gas/oil companies need so much coddling from the US congress (on both sides of the isle).

I couldn’t help noticing this little nugget:

Baker told the New York Times that he will meet with members of the Trump administration on Wednesday, including Vice President Mike Pence, Jared Kushner, and Ivanka Trump.

So Jared AND Ivanka are part of the Administration. Were they subjected to Senate hearings and confirmed by the Senate when I wasn’t paying attention.

Well if Saint Ronnie of Dementia thinks it’s OK then how on Earth could we poor souls ever deem to criticize?

The R’s still oppose a carbon tax. Those who are proposing this are largely former GOP advisers who have no power or influence in today’s party hierarchy.

And the shielding companies from pollution lawsuits bit, well, they are already suing the US gov’t to be able to pollute without limits. See here-- https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/green/reports/2017/01/26/297297/the-oil-and-gas-companies-suing-to-pollute-without-limits/

So the carbon tax is like bankers who rip off consumers and get caught and pay a fine ,but this way the fine is paid up front by polluters and they keep on polluting.Got you Jim boy. SMH.

See Ralph the press does not cover all acts of terrorisim:

FYI, we don’t fucking care what Coretta Scott King may have thought about it.

Shorter GOP: All of us are morons but someone needs to look at rest of the morons. And it costs money.
