“Can I finish, Simone?” Cuccinelli said. “Can you just shut up for a minute and let me finish?”
“Pardon me, sir. You don’t get to tell me to shut up on national television,” Sanders responded.[/quote]
I’m not going to fault Sanders for her response, it’s hard enough to come up with the mot juste at a moment’s notice on national TV. But I think a better response would have been something like, “I’m not going to stay silent or apologize for reminding you that the people you’re defending are white supremacists responsible for the murder of Heather Heyer.”
Ken Cuccinelli is a virulently homophobic religious wack job who was all in behind Ted Cruz until the convention was over. He was a terrible attorney general and failed miserably in his attempt to become governor. He was floated for a seat on the commonwealth’s supreme court but turned that down for whatever reason, and now he spends his time shilling for Donnie and being a racist asshole on whatever network will have him.
In other words, he’s a marginally less successful Pat McCrory. Christ, where do they find these assholes?
We here on TPM can listen to this and see and hear the obvious disrespect and racial animus from a former state secretary of state. The problem with our country is that so many cannot, including our current President and most of the GOP Senate and House members. I weep for our country.
Did anyone else notice how many times the Cooch interrupted Ms. Sanders before she interrupted his attempt to dismiss Charlottesville as just the work of some lone blogger and his confederates?
Well, that asshat won, because she did shut up for the next two minutes while he droned on.
It’s what our side does. We allow them to win by defining the language in their favor, and if that doesn’t work they get as mean as they have to in order to dominate the microphone. They defend the indefensible through the bullying we saw in that video. They have no reasonable argument, what they have is intimidation, and it works, as it did in that video.
And if that doesn’t work, they run people over with their cars.
The Right thinks it owns the concept of filibustering and points of view. Anyone else trying to do that is immediately the enemy. The Left must continue to respond in kind and not be silenced.
eta: @busdrivermike, this has been my argument today: we, on the Left, are so afraid of offending, of operating outside the norm, that we are getting marginalized. We need to be calling out this nonsense, on a regular basis.
As @Lacuna-Synecdoche says: the better response would have been something like, “I’m not going to stay silent or apologize for reminding you that the people you’re defending are white supremacists responsible for the murder of Heather Heyer.” This needs to be repeated by every single person on the Left and every single real journalist facing this kind of nonsense from the Right, every single day. Every. Single. Day.
Yup. I love how the reich-wingers were moaning about their ‘lost’ First Amendment Rights by counter-protestors who were exercising THEIR First Amendment Rights.
Freedom of Speech doesn’t mean that anyone has to listen to you.
What the reich-wing in America wants is a graduated Freedom of Speech, wherein their speech is elevated over everyone else’s, and everyone else has to listen to their ramblings.
