Discussion: Former Florida Police Officer Sentenced To 25 Years For Killing Black Motorist

When they train minority cops to believe they act with the same arrogant impunity as white cops, tragedies like this will be the result.

No winners here. But so many white cops have gotten off in similar circumstances. Why did the jury in FL finally decide to convict this one? But the Florida laws encourage this kind of outcome, sadly.

This scenario makes sense:

“Police, may I help you?”

Innocent, law abiding man waiting for a tow truck: Pulls gun and points it at police officer. Does not fire, even when the police officer pulls his own gun and starts firing at him.

If it hadn’t been for that recording, this ludicrous version of events would have been accepted as fact, and that piece of fucking shit would still be a cop today. I wonder how many times this has happened, and will happen in the future, with no recording to put the lie to such bullshit.

Well, for one, this cop was Asian. So, the sacred white line isn’t broken.

I would like to believe that it was the video, not the officer’s race, that was the significant factor in the conviction.

But then there is the Daniel Shaver case.

Hard to ignore the cop perjuring himself when there was a recording he didn’t know about.

And yet there are still people arguing that he should be a serving officer.

"Raja is the man you wanted serving and protecting you.”

You forgot to add “and shooting you in cold blood and murdering you”

Ok, that’s better.

No shit. He was hired to serve and protect people like Corey Jones. Wasn’t he?

That was my thought as well, the only cops I have seen convicted recently are a somali in MN , a chinese in NY, and this guy in FL. White ones walk no matter how unreasonable and sadistic the killing was.

The Mohamed Noor trial in Minneapolis is wrapping up. He’s the Somali police officer who shot Justine Damond. He took the stand today:

The Jury is evenly split between black and white jurors.
I would not even venture a guess how it will end.
Noor testified today he seen Justine’s pink top and blonde hair and her arm going up without seeing her hands. He got scared and shot.
On another note.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey banned police “warrior training” recently. Minneapolis police department union will ignore the ban and will offer free “warrior” training to any officer who wants it.

The warrior-style training most recently came under scrutiny after the fatal police shooting of Philando Castile during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights three summers ago.

Jeronimo Yanez, the former St. Anthony police officer who was later acquitted for shooting Castile, attended a two-day training course called “The Bulletproof Warrior,” which critics said trains officers to consider everyone and everything a potential threat.

I recall he shot him in the back. If that’s still the case, he should’ve been sentenced to a lot longer than 25 years.

Well, the judge did go out of his way to day he wrestled mightily with his decision on the sentence. So there’s that.

I really hate this waffling headline, which deliberately makes it unclear if a cop killed a black motorist or if a former cop did. If he was cop when he murdered that black motorist, then the headline should plainly state that fact. Save the information that he’s no longer a cop for the body of the report. It’s not salient.

I’ve seen the same approach for wrongdoing by executives of large companies. I don’t know if this is driven by some fear of lawsuits from the police departments and companies, but if that’s the case, it’s chickenshit behavior that perverts the responsibility to convey stories accurately in the headlines, as that’s all that most readers see and remember.

Don’t you mean the thin white line?

How do you suppose this will be twisted and contorted during the NRA convention? I understand that Dotard is supposed to speak
. This sounds like a story he would use if he thought that he could lie about the black guy.

The Minneapolis situation is a perfect microcosm of the problem. The mayor needs to exert control. Heads should roll or insubordinate cops, at a minimum, should be put on permanent desk duty with no prospect of advancement.

Well, there was that one panicky white guy in South Carolina who was so completely out of line you can imagine all the other cops said “I do not feel safe working with that idiot” and underbussed him.
