Gates’ history is replete with mistakes and boners he never talks about. Yet he does like to receive acclaim as the lone voice of reason and yet dishes dirt about anybody he perceives as a threat to his own sense of personal glory. Poses humble but is quite vain and self-protective. Perhaps working for a long time in DC creates that particular type of armor.

I think organizing the massive military resources of the North while guiding the Union to victory in the Civil War, or raising and training 13 million soldiers and airmen while overseeing the atomic bomb and Allied victory in WWII, arguably qualify as “heavy lifts”.
