Discussion: Forget Congress: Obama Moves Forward With New Gun Restrictions

“It’s game on!”.

Snark? Right Randy?

Don’t know about ATF… but reports state :

The White House says the FBI will hire 230 more examiners to process background checks. It's an attempt to speed up the process so buyers don't fall through the cracks.

“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

Doesn’t apply here IMO. He was POTUS getting BJ’s from an intern while conducting business in the Oval Office. And as a result lost the last year of his presidency. Unforgivable.

“This is a courageous move by our President.”

Wow, you got it bad.

Just got the email blast from the WH. This is good. How can Republicans who claim to be pro-law enforcement and repeat the false mime that there is a war on cops be opposed to this?

“The President’s budget for FY2017 will include funding for 200 new ATF agents and investigators who can help enforce our gun laws, including the measures announced today. Strategic and impactful enforcement will help take violent criminals off the street, deter other unlawful activity, and prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands.”

How’s about some retroactivity?

Have all registered owners renew their ability to possess their weapons by doing current status check ups.

Oh, what’s this Congress thing mentioned in the article, is that something new?

Veto and executive order?
Huh?

Ouch!
That would leave a mark.

I would have thought that police depts all over the country would be in favor of this move. For self preservation of their officers if for no other reason. A beat cop would be safer if there were fewer guns around one would think.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump told supporters
Saturday that he will veto President Obama’s actions on guns if elected
to the White House. “The Second Amendment, it’s so great to me,” Trump said at a campaign rally in Biloxi, Miss.“We’re not changing the Second Amendment.”

Trump, Obama isn’t changing the 2nd amendment. He’s just stopping a loophole that allows criminals to get guns unimpeded. Apparently since you are not in favor of what Obama is doing you must be in favor of criminals getting guns w/o any restriction.

No, Darcy.

My point is that I expect this EO will target the ability of dangerous individuals to access guns, bring this issue up for national debate once again, and hopefully challenge Congress to defend and explain – during an election season – its repeated failure to take up this issue with meaningful and lasting legislation.

Your point, Darcy?

There was just a two day gun show here in Tucson. I could have purchased all sorts of guns w/o the least background check. All that would have been required would be money. The show was advertised on huge bill boards around town. It was held at the Pima County fair grounds where there are several huge spacious buildings. Hundreds of dealers were present I assume (I did not attend).
I might add that this fair grounds is a mear 50 miles from the Mexican border. Easy peasy for smugglers to get guns and take’em south. The cartels will be happy.

I have never understood this. Every four or five years, I must renew my state ID or the ID itself is worthless (mine is, currently, as I’ve been very busy with medical crap and waiting for the next surgery to be over … it affects my appearance, so I have a valid reason but that’s not an excuse to the authorities) – so, I’ve never been able to understand the pragmatic difference between the two. One (the state ID), while very important, is not as potentially dangerous to other human beings. The other is. I see no reason whatsoever to require a license renewal every four or five years coupled with a requirement to demonstrate knowledge of proper safety. This isn’t rocket science, Congress.

no way. I used to think that, too. but most cops are uber gun nuts. it’s totally counterintuitive to me, but I see a lot of cop posts on facebook, and they are rabid “a gun in every pot” folks. basically, the most crazy of the crazy gun nuts. like, really really crazy. imagine wayne lapierre in a uniform, and there’s your typical cop vis-à-vis guns.

“This is a dangerous level of executive overreach, and the country will not stand for it,” said House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said the guy with no reach whatsoever.

My point is the president once again is bringing a butter knife to a gun fight. Too little and as always too late.

Too little: “The guidance aims to narrow the gun show loophole.” “narrow”?

“The White House says the FBI will hire 230 more examiners to process background checks. It’s an attempt to speed up the process so buyers don’t fall through the cracks.”

WOW! President gone wild! Nipping at the edges once again. Does he dare bring in the gun manufacturer CEO’s and demand smart weapons technology? You know, as in direct confrontation! Considering all the slaughtering of innocent Americans, men, women and children I would expect a serious effort to take on the manufacturers, where the core issue originates for gun safety.

And too late: remember the Clinton’s assault weapons ban legislation? When it sunsetted did Obama push to reinstate that legislation - when he had the votes? Noooo. But let’s not dare dig that up and put it in the president’s face.

Your last word is just about all of the answer you need, although the reality of that is shitty.
Common sense, does not apply, so don’t bang your head over it. The gun lobby is winning, congressmen are tools bought and paid for and dead Americans are the outcome. There you go.
