So is this the case where Republicans get to show why Teacherâs Unions are bad?
"A Florida middle school teacher was suspended for 10 days for using the ânâ wordâŚ
Swinyar also called his students dumb and made comments like âYou all should not be dating these different African American boys because they are not worth itâ."
Suspended?!
For a lousy 10 days?!
Sorry, but this racist pig should never, ever be allowed to teach public-school children again. Period.
Fire his tuchus â now.
Along with any coworkers or administrators who knew about his bigotry but looked the other way.
Gone. Buh-bye. Adios, jackass.
And good luck with your new career asking former students if they want fries with that.
He should be terminated, not suspended. This type of behavior is unacceptable in our society, except that Trump has unleashed the âdeplorables.â
Wait a goddamn minute! Didnât I just read this story last week? About that FL teacher who ran a white supremacist website on the side?
Oh, wait. That was a different FL middle school teacher⌠The humidity down there rots their brains, I think.
Naah. Itâs the political climateâŚ
When reading the headline, and not looking at the picture, doesnât he look like someone who would do this?
(yeah donât judge a book by itâs cover yadda yadda)
So I thought the suspension was a formality, due to Union rules, but the guy was going to get fired.
Then I read the letter.
What the hell? Aside from the slur and the racist advice he was promulgating, why the hell did the subject of who these girls were dating even come up? I canât imaging allowing my child back into his classroom. And, on top of that, this happened in October and all this while heâs been in daily contact with - and in a job where he had authority over - 7th graders.
Itâs possible the board is just making excuses. But itâs also possible that they donât have a big litigation budget. And you just know that if they donât fire this guy in complete compliance with his contract there will be some outside-funded alt-right lawyer coming after them. (Of course, now that theyâve started the documentation process, the odds are he comes back from his suspension, opens his mouth, and says the words that make it necessary to fire him.)
(Years ago I worked for a company that decided not to hire someone when they found out at his job interview that he was a raving loon creationist who intended to use his potential new job as a bully pulpit. Still had to pay off him and his lawyers.)
Would ha e voted for Hillary if Dems had dropped their identity politics and the NY Times had more columnists writing from his point of view.
With any luck thatâs exactly what parents will do. Turn the bastard into a pariah.
Was the creationist loonâs attorney named Sekulow by any chance?
Say remember that thing about arming teachers? This turnip faced racist swine would likely be at the front of the line for that.
Yeah, I keep saying that: the people that want to be armed are the last people Iâd want to be armed.
Unfortunately, this type of behavior is acceptable in our society. Itâs happening all over the place, and people are getting away with it, and worse. Jefferson Sessions is cracking down on young leftist activists, expecially black activists, treating BLM as a terrorist menace: but the actual white supremacist, right-wing terrorists who are disrupting our culture, shredding our democratic institutions and norms, and, oh yes, notching up quite the body countâheâs just not that worried about them.
We are (along with much of the democratic West) on a steady, accelerating descent into fascism. And unlike 80 years ago, there doesnât seem to be anybody out there willing to go to war to stop it. Weâll find out this November if voting still does the trick, but I actually wouldnât bet the rent on it.
Give him a gun!
As frustrating as it is, I think the board did the best they could do under the circumstances. This move protects them from legal consequences and puts him under a disciplinary microscope. I would guess that he doesnât even come back from the suspension. While there are undoubtedly parents in this district who agree with him, there will probably be quite a few who refuse to allow their children back into his classroom. Further, since his job was protected by the teachers union, that same union will probably come down hard on him to protect their own reputation.
While I would like to see this guy fired and banned from all classrooms for eternity, I have to say that Iâm glad that the teachers union is strong enough to protect its members from outright firing without due process. I suspect that for every racist pig who gets to keep his job, there are dozens of liberal-minded teachers who run afoul of their conservative/evangelical/racist principals and boards for being âelitistâ and âungodly,â but go to sleep at night knowing that their jobs are secure.
A CBA is a CBA. They can only do what the CBA lets them do. The point of these provisions is to keep school districts from using pretexts for arbitrary, capricious or political firings. This is an obvious consequence. School district says âwell, what about racism? Canât we fire a teacher for open racism?â Union imagines black teachers accused of reverse racism for not teaching that Robert E. Lee was a good slaveowner and says âfuck no.â And this is what you get.
Next time they negotiate, the district can use this to wrong-foot the union negotiators. Until then, this is the contract and theyâre stuck with it.
He only got 10 days? This cannot be his first offense. âProgressive disciplineâ or notâŚand isnât THAT just a little dog whistleâŚ
The board says this was the first time he was reported. I could easily see him having a long history of being a racist assh*le in his classes, but no one until now wanting to go through the pain of documenting everything and filing an official complaint with the school board (and basically letting their kid in for a world of official bullying).
âRacist Drunk with Anger Issues, Charged with Educating Children, Loses It,â sources say.
