Because that’s how much those kind of rugs cost. In this case it wasn’t financial mismanagement, but rather a simple typo. Also if the cost is a concern I have two bits of good news. The company that made them is replacing them for free, and the Sheriff’s Department is auctioning off the misspelled rugs. They’ll easily triple the price they paid.

Probably true, but the problem isn’t the rugs, it’s the misplaced priorities of government. I see no public high school teachers with $500 rugs, let alone adequate salaries. That’s financial mismanagement.
