Whether it’s window dressing or whether it isn’t, none of it matters if Governor Voldemort continues to advocate voter suppression throughout the state.
I live in Fl and this new map is as phony as the old one. Fl is as corrupt as Mississippi, Louisiana, and South Carolina.
Hey Mr. Fox! You keeping an eye on those hens?
“Republicans contended that the Democratic map was unconstitutional because it lowered the number of black voters in Brown’s district. The federal Voting Rights Act bars states from diluting the voting strength of minorities.”
So they pack all the black people into one district in order to dilute the overall voting power, and then claim that people can’t change it because it will dilute the voting power of black voters in that one district.
Oh joy, they get to have 1 person represent them, and all it cost was any actual representation.
It’s time for a Constitutional Amendment to eliminate gerrymandering and elect the House of Representatives by proportional representation.
The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature on Monday swiftly approved new maps
Just reading that alone let me know something is fishy with this map. When have you ever known Republicans to do anything swiftly unless it was of benefit to them?
The Washington Post has a pretty cool interactive graphic where you can compare the old map and the new one.
Short version: Not much has changed. The 5th district is still the same, obvious gerrymander that it was before. The judge should hold the legislature in contempt of court.
This is how an entrenched, stagnant conservative minority can rule over a dynamic progressive minority.
By cheating democracy. There’s no other word for it.
These people cheat.
If you try to call it “political acumen” or “it’s just the way the game is played” or “this is the way things work in politics” and you are one of them.
…no doubt, if DC steps in with federal regulations to stop their cheating, the Florida Republicans will cry “states rights”, with a familiar ring.
If the electoral map is unconstitutional, it goes to reason that anyone elected improperly through the original process is not a legitimately elected official. Subsequently, they should be removed from office
Sounds like an argument a Republican can get behind.
Meet the new map. Same as the old map…
These scurrilous Republican bastards will claw out every advantage, every dirty political trick and never stop. Gollum is on his way out, but so many batshit insane GOPers will remain to carry on the Koch agenda.
That certainly keeps things in perspective. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The new Florida map, same as the old Florida map.
The new Florida map, same as the old Florida map. The GOP are born cheaters.
