Discussion for article #246437
I always thought that was brilliant of Reid. I am going to miss the dude after he retires
Another possible bombshell in the works. That long filed lawsuit against Trump and Trump “University” goes to court in May.
Trump: Mitt is an anchor baby and I will deport him with his family. He will help build the wall from Mexican side. Free.
That’s going to help Trump. Free publicity. His supporters are going to vote for him no matter what. He will only gain sympathy. He is going to love this.
Well, Mittens knows how much this came to bite him in his ass. And as a bonus I’d like to see Rube and Cruz’s returns too!
The primary will very likely be over and decided before May. Being sued for fraud certainly won’t help him in the general election. Not at all.
Romney (Didn’t he give his sons millions with no tax liability?) is just not the right person to do this.
That’s going to be fun—that whole thing was pure, undiluted snake-oil grifting. And the pictures of people posing with a cardboard cutout of the great man himself, when they were led to believe they’d really meet him, will be a pretty cool visual metaphor.
Just pathetic. The entire republican party, the establishment and the crazy wing, all of them are pathetic.
Now will lawsuits and bad publicity like this. But then, this is Trump and any and all publicity seems to help him.
There’s no right person to launch this line of attack. It’s weak tea, and Trump can work it into his general message of being a ruthless businessman who extracts every penny from his opponent. And in this case his opponent is the IRS. If hiding his tax returns didn’t hurt Romney in the primary, it surely won’t hurt Trump. This is a guy claiming he could kill people and still get elected. If that doesn’t hurt him, tax returns sure as hell won’t either.
Actual tweets from The Donald:
Mitt Romney, who totally blew an election that should have been won and whose tax returns made him look like a fool, is now playing tough guy
When Mitt Romney asked me for my endorsement last time around, he was so awkward and goofy that we all should have known he could not win!
Let me finish for Trump: “Yooooge LOSER!!! Look at this pitiful loser. Loser! He wouldn’t release his own tax returns and now he wants me to release mine? Nasty. Sad. He lost to Obama in 2012 and I would have won in a landslide. He picks Ryan who is also as I said, a sad sad little loser.
We’re going to make America great again because idiot Romney was too much of a pathetic loser to do so the last time he tried. Nasty, nasty guy- so pathological. And a cult member. They say those people have lots of wives at the same time. Smart people say this and I like Mitt but the best people are telling me he’s a nasty guy and pathological as well. I can’t say.”
~Mitt closes his mouth, picks up his binders and calls Annbot to unlock the car elevator! He’s never saying anything again. Calls Rubio sobbing. I tried to help…bbbbuutt…he’s so mean. You’re on your own now.~
You have to keep in mind:
- He only has partial support of Republicans. This will help with those on the fence.
- It may hurt against Dems/Independents. He wasnt going to gain much.
I think people are discounting Trump’s appeal to Dems. He will go hard on
- Iraq and make issue of money spent on it to. He will tie all of it to Hillary/Bush due to her support of Iraq war.
- He will go for taxing the rich, much more than any Dem will say. His supporters will support him anyway and Dem leaning independents might be swayed.
I dont see him winning but we elected Bush- twice. He had failure written all over his face. Trump is much smarter.

No…not from Ann the Egg…from Mitt! ~rimshot!~ rotfl
Idiot. Trump’s followers don’t care about his tax returns.
No, I don’t think those who think he’s a boorish, empty suited fraud are going to be swayed to vote for him when they find out he’s being sued for being a fraud. This is exactly the kind of thing that plays into every aspect of why certain segments of the Republican Party absolutely abhor him. They already think he’s a snake oil salesman, a lawsuit like this only serves to confirm it.
That’s going to be really tough for a Republican to do. And there’s now tape of him saying he agrees with invading Iraq. I suspect Iraq will be a non-issue.
And he’ll be deliciously easy to expose because his plans to tax the rich don’t actually tax the rich. Plus, HRC’s plan goes much further.
Yeah, Bush won once and he did so because he was able to pull some 35+% of the Latino vote at a time when you didn’t even need to garner that much Latino support in order to win the presidency. Trump will be lucky to pull 15% of their vote and that’s going to kill him all over the country.
Mayhaps’…Trump’s tax returns are inscribed on golden tablets and that’s why Mittens wants to see them?
I seem to recall that Mitt Romney eventually released one full year of tax returns and a “20 year average” tax rate with no details but his word behind it but never actually released the tax returns going back beyond that and he did so in late September before the election.
Comments don’t always allow links but search for “Romney releases his 2011 tax return and 20-year average tax rate” in Google and there’s an article from The Hill on the subject. Since Romney obviously knew he was running for president in 2011, his tax return from that year and that year alone never really was convincing evidence. It also went against the longstanding practice of releasing a decade or more of full tax returns.
TPM is giving Romney a lot of undeserved credibility in my opinion by Sera effectively claiming in the article that Reid’s claims were all later debunked by Romney releasing his returnS (plural). I don’t mean to be excessively critical but some of TPM’s reporting on a few of the things like this has struck me as a bit sloppy of late.
