The party must be mercilessly broken, snuffed out and ground beneath our heels. There can be no resolution to any of this unless and until it is reduced to non-existence. Its base must be factionalized and their conflicting self-interests brought to bear for each of them such that no future alliance between and among them is possible.
Gee Jeff, I think Senator Mitch McConnell is in the same party and chamber as you, and you must see him from time to time.
Have you asked him why it cannot come up for a vote? Or is this your subtle hint that you are not getting a good, appropriate answer? Inquiring minds want to know.
Ya think? Seriously, thatās certain. He was smart enough to see where this was going from the beginning. Will give him that much. But he wasnāt brave enough to put down any markers, risk any political capitalāpiss off the base, to put it baldly. It might work, thereās not many truly brave people in any line of work. But itās hard to respect.
True. And lip service to the rule of law, our way of life, our ideals is still a kind of service. But heās not the last good guy. Heās the best of a very, very bad lot.
Flake made a speech against Trump early on and immediately became political kryptonite for Republicans. So you can safely divide the remaining Republicans into 2 groups - those that are stupid enough to actually believe in Tweet and support him, and those who know he is a complete bag of shit but will support him as long as he keeps delivering what they want - deregulation, tax breaks and conservative judges. So far none of them have had the courage to stand up and simply say that Trump is a criminal and unworthy of the office he holds - none of them. I know people will call me naive, and maybe I am, but with ALL of the evidence of Trumpās total douchebaggery on full display since his nomination and subsequent election, I am actually surprised at the cowardice of the party as a whole. I would never have predicted such a complete and total failure of one party in our system - I knew they were corrupt and power hungry, but I never believed they would give this kind of cover to someone so obviously devoid of any character or scruples. It has shocked me to my core.
Not at all. In fact, if you open his coffin, youāll probably see him cheering. The entire McCarthy era was an orchestrated far-right attempt at a fascist takeover. The Trump eraās another.
Fun Fact: The term āDeep Stateā comes to us from the far right of the McCarthy era. It had the same meaning then as now, namely that elected conservatives should not in any way be constrained by the rule of law as enforced by unelected officials they did not personally appoint.
Let me offer a contrary opinion to most of whatās being posted here. As frustrated as I am with Flakeās apparent lack of follow-through to his statements of concern, letās acknowledge that he essentially sacrificed his Senate seat by challenging Trump, and he is concretely holding up judicial appointments.
I wish it were more, but at least heās speaking up and Iāll take his approach over 50 other Republican senatorsā¦a low bar, I know.
Agree. If our form of government is to survive, this party, rotted to the core, must be banished. They have utterly failed in their jobs, abandoned their oaths, and exhibited the worst imaginable corruption. trump would have been stopped in his tracks well before this if the party had not succumbed to Russian bribery and degenerate greed. Now their lies are falling apart and each one is scrambling for moral cover as the people slowly rise to unseat them.
Fascinating to watch the disintegration of a major political party. Scary, too.
