Thanks TPM and Tierney for an excellent and clarifying article. The rumor mill was spinning out of control on both the left and right yesterday regarding these church burnings. This helps. Also welcome to TPM Tierney.

it appears that a bay of hale was intentionally set on fire
Are there no proofreaders? Are there no copy editors? Just because it gets past the spell checker doesnāt mean itās correct.

Investigators say there werenāt any early indications that arson was behind the church fire in Greeleyville, S.C. this week, where FBI officials have said they believe lightening to be the cause.
Best typo of the day. I think lightening may be the cause, too.

Point 6 - Church fires are quite common, about 5 per day in the US. They are usually old structures vulnerable to fire. They are frequently vacant, which leads to people hanging around them. Many homeless find refuge there, and many a cigarette has started a fire. Some try to keep warm in winter months by starting fires, or using kerosene heaters. Old wiring is another cause of fires. Overloading circuits. Fire Prevention at churches is a huge issue. Here in NYC a while back, the largest soup kitchen in NYC was in the Church of the Holy Apostles, and it burned down when roofers doing some work accidentally heated up roofing timbers. They left at the end of the day not realizing they had started a fire, and the entire place was gutted. These things happen. I would also note that we are currently in summer months, and thunderstorms are very prevalent this time of year, and at least two of these fires were from lightning strikes, or the result of power lines being hit by a tree falling in a storm, igniting fires.
The media needs to stop these knee jerk reactions to common events. Fear mongering. No different than when the FOX crowd immediately yells āterrorismā every time there is some kind of event like a train crash.
If none of these were racially motivated, Iāll eat my hat. Iāll have to buy one first, but then after I do, Iāll eat it.

āVandalismā is not the real motive. If someone intentionally burns a black church, call it what it really is:āDomestic terrorism.ā The āvandalā was trying to send a message of terror.
On the other hand, there is a baseline of church fires that occur all the time as described in this report from NFPA:

No, it was all over the media, starting on June 25th, A week ago. You are just stating completely inaccurate info.

There were articles on every news service. And there have been dozens since, all speculating. Somehow a common event (5 per day) was a national story. So to date none have been declared a hate crime, zero evidence of it. But we have millions of people hearing about how black churches are being burned in the South by the kkk, etc. Just go to any article on this topic on this site, and you have people outraged about all this āterrorismā, etc. Total nonsense with nothing to back it up. Now, maybe they will find out one was a hate crime. If they do, THEN you report it. Why do people just not wait for facts. Again, no different than a train crash and the FOX crowd yelling "it was terrorists!!!ā.

Occamās Razor just keeps popping up right in front of me on this one.
They can justify it every way possible, but in the end, 7 black churches burned down since the shooting.
Almost amazing but not surprising under the circumstances.
As soon as I saw it I couldnāt wait to click on Comments which are often better than the articles commented on. You did not disappoint.
