He was fine sitting back and enjoying the GOP’s long history of using dog-whistles and race baiting but now that Rump is doing it openly it is too much. Such high moral standards.

Trump is indeed uniting the country…everyone hates him.

He’s a credit to his race. The human race.

“I think that’s all I need to say but certainly the fascists took control of Germany under the same types of strategies,” he added.

How refreshing! But this guy’s dad was witness to German concentration camps… many more voters who have been so moronized that this means nothing to them.

Wow. A Republican (well, now former Republican) who puts principles and the nation ahead of party. That’s one at least.

I wonder if its too late for Iowa to change the ballot for November for this to “No Party”, or how that works this late in the race after a Republican primary has already been held and is now over and done. I guess it won’t be the first time, but I can’t think of another off the top of my head where that’s happened.

Hey you have to start somewhere. The interesting question this cycle is that does GOPs addiction to culture wars, racism, reactionaries and nut jobs have a bottom, at which point they start a recovery, or is there truly no bottom?

So far the answer has been the later, but maybe a few finally decided to pull the needle out from between their toes, looked around and notice the toilet they are holed up in and realize maybe they have a problem…

I hate being right.

Don’t get me wrong.
I do like being right.

But I told all of my ®-voting friends what was going to happen.
Did they take me seriously?
Noooo0000OOOO0000oooo!

Now we’re one major f^ckup from the first Looney Tunes POTUS.
(Diebold, anybody?)

When it sucks-- to be right.

Heh. A drop in the bucket. Surely he realizes that his actions amount to trying a stop a tidal wave by holding up a hand—however principled his stand may be.

No, GOPers… “you built that.”

Well, if he’s actually making any sort of sacrifice. I’ve suspected that maybe just maybe all these GOP guys haven’t been loving the numbers they’ve been seeing with Trump at the top of the ticket.

I really like when I can respect people I disagree with. This guy gives me a bit of hope this is possible in the real world (given that until today he was associated with modern day republican party I am assuming that I will disagree with him on most policy issues).

[With apologies to Possum Lodge:]

Bow your heads for the GOP Prayer:

“I’m a Republican…”

“But I can change…”

“If I have to…”

“I guess…”

While I absolutely agree with state senator Johnson, he is a day late and a dollar short. The parallel between Trump’s political rise and that of Hitler in the late 20s and early 30s has been readily evident for a long time – scapegoating, blaming the press, condemning the incumbent government for every wrong since original sin, ridiculing people with disabilities, demonizing anyone who criticizes him or challenges him, threatening opponents with what he is going to do to them once he in in power, encouraging bigotry and violence – these are the same tools used by the Nazis. Add to that Trump’s narcissism which easily equals that of Hitler and you have a very dangerous man that will soon be the Republican nominee for President of the United States. Unless . . . . . does Johnson, Ryan, Graham, Kirk, and any other Repugs have the guts to challenge his nomination? I have my doubts.

We are entering very dangerous and unstable times.

I will say this: if it took THIS to get you to leave the GOP/Teatrolls, then you’re probably definitely still a douchenozzle.

Sometimes you have to do what’s right even when it won’t have any large impact. It’s called integrity. Credit where it’s due for one lone person taking a stand.

One more step forward on the path to substantial Republican opposition to Mr. Trump.

The momentum continues to build and we should encourage it, not denigrate it, even if it is still fainter progress than we would like.

I would like to see us encourage more Republicans to switch parties, especially member of the US House of Representatives.

To that end I sent the following to my Representative:

"I recognize that, given the nature of the constituency that comprises the bulk of the electorate in our district, it may be difficult for you to always give voice to the reservations I suspect that you have at least begun to harbor about the direction in which the Republican Party has moved over the past several years, and especially during this election season.

"It must be particularly appalling to see the response, or rather, lack of an effective correcting response, to the impending nomination of Mr. Trump as your party’s candidate for president, leaving you in a nearly untenable moral as well as political position.

"If, as seems likely, you weather the coming storm and your role as our Representative is reaffirmed, even as many of your colleagues in both the House and Senate are swept into retirement, I would hope that you would give careful consideration to your position, and ask yourself whether you could better serve your constituency and yourself by continuing on your present path, or whether you should consider making a strategic switch and move to the Democratic side of the aisle after the election. That would position you well for the 2018 election by giving you time to build a record of accomplishment and service to your constituents which would justify the move.

"If you, as I do, consider that to be a wise and principled change, you might want to consider asking some of your colleagues of like mind in the House to make the same change, as a matter of principle.

"It is possible, that given the shambles in which the GOP finds itself now, and which is likely to worsen incrementally by the end of the year, you will see that as an opportunity to rebuild a new movement from the ashes of the old that might be more to your liking.

"That would no doubt be a brave thing to do, if only because it would be so daunting, but I wonder how much more effective your efforts could be if you aligned yourself with President Clinton, as she struggles to reunify the nation and move us forward in ways which have been impaired so much by the intransigence of so many Republicans over the course of the last few years.

"President Obama has accomplished wonders in the face of the obstructionism he has faced, but he could have accomplished much more if he had been able to work with a loyal opposition rather than be confronted by a relentless stream of abuse and obstructionism.

“You can help President Clinton move us forward, no matter how you align yourself, but I would encourage you to consider switching to the Democratic side of the aisle. I suspect you would sleep better.”

I would encourage others to write in similar fashion to their Republican Representatives, especially ones who are likely to win in the fall. We don’t need to flip many seats to return Rep Pelosi to her rightful place, and give President Clinton the help she needs in restoring sanity to the legislative and perhaps even the political process.

The rebellion of Kirk and Johnson will be like the falling of small stones that starts an avalanche…
