Cruz was in an enviable position, having dual citizenship with Canada. A thinking person would realize their great fortune and renounce U.S. citizenship, if made to choose. If only all of us were saddled with Cruz’s choice.

It is odd that anyone with aspirations for higher office would hang on to dual citizenship. It is odd that such a person would even have dual citizenship to begin with, but that’s just an accident of birth. The only wrinkle I have heard about this issue that makes me wonder is that his mother affirmatively became a Canadian citizen in order to allow Cruz’s dad to claim the right to come to Canada to marry her. It has always been my understanding that affirmatively becoming a citizen of another country automatically voided your U.S. citizenship (as opposed to just having a legal entitlement that did not require you to do anything). I would never vote for Cruz and I don’t really care about his status, but it does seem like he is awfully cavalier about it given the kind of made up hysteria that he and his ilk have used against Obama on this issue.

Does the question of Cruz’s eligibility really hang on his mother’s residency? How long she was in Canada before the birth and at what age she moved there. Also when was the birth registered with the US embassy. Is this correct or just another bit of internet info not based in fact?
I don’t think it hangs on her residency. I think it hangs on whether she had a valid claim of actually being a U.S. citizen when Cruz was born, and no one seems to have an authoritative answer for that. For me, there is no issue that Cruz was born in Canada. But most people born in foreign countries whose parents are U.S. citizens are not dual citizens.
It’s just beautiful to watch every single member of the Klown Kar flail and fail as they try to figure out whether to support or dismiss every new crackpot theory. The hypocrisy is obvious even to the brain-dead 27% GOP base voter.

Dommyluc: It’s “odd” that Carly Fiorina believes she has more of a chance to become President of the United States as the dump I left in the bowl this morning has of winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The part that’s odd to me is that Cruz, a Ivy league lawyer, claimed in 2013 that he didn’t know that he was a Canadian citizen, as if birthright citizenship never came up in law school. Seriously?

As far as I can see, all Ted has to do is produce a valid BC for his mother. She, no doubt, would have satisfied the residency reqs…
While Cruz is legit, it is somewhat fugly given the allegations that Mama renounced her US citizenship…

It’s not a settled legal question according to his Constitutional Law professor at Harvard who also said that Cruz was smart, but that Obama was smarter

I don’t see what’s odd about it. I don’t think the Constitution prohibits citizenship in another country as well as America an exclusion for POTUS eligibility. Cruz is an American. Has been since the day he was born. Canadian too until a short time ago but that did not make him ineligible.
