He was a wonderful actor. Deserves his rest.
I enjoyed him in every role … god speed.
I happened to watch an episode of ‘Maverick’ last night – “Gun-Shy,” an epic set-up and put-down of ‘Gunsmoke.’ This may be the best episode of the entire series, with a script seemingly lifted from Mad magazine.
He will live on forever in the land of eternal reruns.
Sorry to hear this. He was one of those special few actors who you never realized were among your favorites until you saw them in another role.
Wonderful actor, seemed to have his ego in check and was there to do a good job. He was a lifelong Democrat who said he met his wife at an Adlai Stevenson convention. Sadly he was also a life-long smoker. Damn cigarettes.
Married for almost 60 years. Not you typical hollywood actor in any way…
Sad to hear this. I have been a fan of his almost my entire life. Seemed like a good guy as well as a great actor. RIP.
James Garner was a legend? And not a real human being? I had no idea!
A body has been found?
Better call Jim Rockford.
James Garner was a true maverick.
Rest in peace but live forever on film.
He was wildly popular overseas as well. I watched “Detektiv Rockford” on German TV as a 12 year old and I’ve liked his character ever since. Ruhe sanft.
From the NYT obit: “Mr. Garner, a lifelong Democrat who was active in behalf of civil rights and environmental causes, always said he met his wife, the former Lois Clarke, in 1956 at a presidential campaign rally for Adlai Stevenson, though in “The Garner Files” Mrs. Garner said they had actually met at a party earlier.”
Here’s a nice picture of him at the March on Washington 1963. (Sorry, having a brain freeze on how to import the image.)
If you have never seen The Americanization of Emily, rent it immediately!
R.I.P., James Garner, and thanks for the memorys.
I’ve never seen. I’ll check it out.
Great actor, better man, and true activist and his politics deserved more comment here.
Quit 17 years AFTER bypass surgery. And was an advocate for legalization too.
Beat me to it; heartily seconded.
For my money, Files was the best show without “star trek” in the title.
Thanks for the memories and godspeed, Jimmy
My husband was born and raised in Oklahoma, so he had a special affinity for James Garner, also an Oklahoman. We loved the Rockford Files. It was the show we never missed an episode of. Wonderful memories of a terrific actor and a very fine man.
The Rockford Files is on Netflix Instant Watch, so I think this would be the time for us to watch a few episodes – and maybe the whole series again.
