Discussion: FIFA Officials Arrested In Zurich; World Cup Votes Probed

Discussion for article #236795

OK. I’m a soccer/futbol fan-- admittedly.
And-- I realize this is 13 minutes of your time.
But John Oliver’s takedown of FIFA-as-racketeers video below
is an amazing and brilliant accounting of oligarchy-gone-wild.

EDIT: Did not realize that David Kurtz had reposted
TPM’s article on the above video elsewhere on TPM today.
My comment from the original thread posted in June 2014:

Caught the entirety of this epic rant last night.
I’m a huge futbol fan (Arsenal/EPL)-- and this takedown was amazing-- and conflicting.

The truth about FIFA is damningly ugly.
Makes the Vatican look like Girl Scouts.
Settled nations will crumble before FIFA does.

EDIT II:
An in-depth blog account of the sordid scandal:
It ain’t over til the corrupt bastards are locked up, but this is progress. – Untold Arsenal: Supporting the club, the manager and the team?

Now if they could do the same for the Olympics.

@jw1 - 13 minutes with John Oliver is never a waste of time. Thanks for the link.

Please let one of the arrestees turn state’s evidence on Bladder.

Sports is corrupt and full of stolen public money and resources. I’m glad these charlatans are in trouble, but you can’t look at a public stadium anywhere without thinking about the graft, back-scratching, and greed that have sent our public funds down the drain. Labor abuse, environmental destruction, stolen land and personal property abound so men can feed their egos. And the “infrastructure” benefits that are always promised are often unfinished and usuallly abandoned later on.

Apparently FIFA is the most corrupt organization since the Nixon White House. And considering some of the other sports governing bodies, that’s saying something.

FIFA is rotten to the core, but why is the FBI burning up resources on this and not on domestic corruption? What, no domestic corruption to chase down? How about the kind of stuff that destroys peoples’ pensions?
