Discussion: Fellow Dem Criticizes Rep Omar For Tweets Critical Of AIPAC: 'Deeply Hurtful'

We have Nazis in the West Wing and Rep. Rose is whining about an imaginary slight to Jews?

So my sister converted to Judaism and married a jew…a really nice guy. But we were very shocked by the anit-minority sentiment inside the Temple.

While clearly anti-semitsm is a form of racism…I find it very hypocritical when jews exploit minorities the way they do and then claim push back as being anit-semitic. Time for jews to stand up and declare anti-semitism as racism and anti-minority as racism…there is no difference.

So does AIPAC really do anything except serve as a confirmation point for antisemites?

Your “n” is too small to draw any statistically valid conclusion about your study population.

I find this controversy a bit confusing. Did Omar actually make a speech against AIPAC? Or just a flippant comment?

I’ve got to say, I really don’t get this. I mean, I understand that Jews using money to influence American politics has been an anti-Semitic trope, but does that mean that ANY criticism of Israel actually using money to influence American politics is inherently anti-Semitic? So Israel just gets a pass on the topic?

I assume Rose is mostly just signaling to his own constituents.

As a Zionist who is disgusted with the policies of the present Israeli regime toward Palestinians and Israeli Arabs, while I would have preferred that criticism of AIPAC come from my co-religionists, fact is that the organization just toes the Israeli government line.

Yes. Having grown up in NY State I get why he wanted to make a statement. I just thought Omar had made more of a frontal attack on AIPAC than she may have actually had. It feels like people are reading into her remarks a bit, and I would think Rose would want to talk to her before lobbing such a statement.

Unfortunately, in the charged atmosphere today, largely yes. As you know, there’s very little middle ground in US politics, and also very little between the Israeli regime and Palestinians.

He spends far too much time signaling to the conservative Staten Islanders. Rose beat Donovan after a massive effort from Democratic volunteers all over New York, who knocked on the doors of practically every house on Staten Island. There were so many people, overwhelmingly women, gathered to do the work on Saturday mornings in November that organizers were not sure what to do with them all. That citywide grassroots effort was allied to a huge turnout from immigrant and minority communities in Staten Island. Since his election, Rose has consistently misread his own success. He voted against Pelosi, he blames “Washington” for Trump’s actions, etc. He needs to spend more time pointing out the obvious–that the GOP is selling his constituents down the river–and more time listening to his base, or I simply can’t see how his 2020 campaign is going to function.

AIPAC doesn’t directly fund campaigns, but what they do is facilitate fundraising throughout the country. Max Rose does not speak for Jews. He speaks for himself. Other Jews may agree with his views; others do not. There is no possible way that anti-boycott legislation would be passed in all sorts of states on the basis of politicians reflecting the views of their constituents, 99 percent of which never heard of the boycott movement and couldn’t care less if they did. AIPAC is just like the NRA. It’s not the power of persuasion alone, or even at all, that makes legislators tow the line.

AIPAC of something… fill in the blank.

According to Politico, AIPAC doesn’t donate directly to political candidates, but it is known for pushing a pro-Israel message in Washington.

AIPAC has been one of the most powerful PACs in the US from the late 70’s. Until J-Street began to compete with them, they were a monopoly, which like all monopolies, abused their position in pushing the most extreme Likud policies. And it is news to me that they do not donate. Like the NRA, serious public scrutiny of AIPAC is long overdue.

  • Finding the common Humanity that compels us to save our Republic should be our Paramount concern.

  • Only a fool does not acknowledge deep differences in constituencies of the Democratic Party.

  • Spats like these occur among people who have not yet grasped these things in their entirety, especially the first thing…

  • As with nearly everything these days, the Outrage Business is doing well.

You can be anti-Israel w/o being anti-Semitic.

Yup, conservative non-Jews in Staten Island

I should clarify that the Israelis are in no way monolithic in their views towards Palestinians. I was agreeing with the concept that it’s not anti-semitic to despise Netanyahu’s criminal government.

As a Jew, I’m not very familiar with the New Testament Christain Bible, but I certainly know antisemitism when I see it, my friend.
