Discussion: Feinstein: Trump Tweets Make Me Worry He'll Try To Fire Mueller, Deputy AG

Maybe Iā€™m mistaken, but I think that both Ryan and McConnell have been much more circumspect in recent days. They need to get more pressure from reporters on their support of Trump.

After the Comey firing, I canā€™t imagine Trump attempting to
fire Mueller. Reason aside, the logistic make it impossible for me to get
there. Rosenstein has said he would refuse any firing order absent the
statutory requirement of ā€˜good causeā€™ so Trump would have to fire Rosenstein ā€“
who unlike Mueller serves at the pleasure of the POTUS. Then we
have the Saturday Night Massacre all over again until someone would be willing
to fire Mueller. And by the way, I donā€™t think that person exists
inside the DOJ. I donā€™t think even Sessions would do it ā€“ and I believe
him capable of almost anything ā€“ and the career people are just too serious.
The career people would all resign first.

For these reasons, I think itā€™s far more likely Trump
simply pardons everyone under investigation. And I think this is the
advice he will get from the sycophants he has surrounded himself with.

The WH will issue a statement (and Trump will likely tweet
first) the investigation is a witch hunt that has paralyzed the function of
government, costing tens of millions and must be ended. The
President had no choice to restore order to the nation.

Then impeachment? Iā€™m with Josh. I donā€™t see the
House ever impeaching Donald J. Trump.

My 2 cents.

I donā€™t think he will pardonā€”not early. Issuing pardons is an admission of guilt, and Trump would find that too damaging.

Expect ā€˜Trumpā€™s Razorā€™ to be fully operational. He could say or do just about anything. He could fire Rosie and Mueller just to show that he can and out of sheer spite. ā€œPrudent Manā€ logic doesnā€™t apply here.

Trump is showing some nicks from cutting too close with the razor, donā€™t you think?
Next one might cut an artery.

Your comment reminded me of this gem from a Bush WH person from 2004?

"The aide said that guys like me were ā€œin what we call the reality-based
community,ā€ which he defined as people who ā€œbelieve that solutions
emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.ā€ ā€¦ ā€œThatā€™s
not the way the world really works anymore,ā€ he continued. ā€œWeā€™re an
empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while youā€™re
studying that realityā€”judiciously, as you willā€”weā€™ll act again,
creating other new realities, which you can study too, and thatā€™s how
things will sort out. Weā€™re historyā€™s actorsā€¦and you, all of you, will
be left to just study what we do.ā€™ā€

The countdown to this possible end to our existence as a nation of laws started the day Ford pardoned Nixon.

Too distracted by legislating granny starving and child suffering. And the press does seem to give a crap about McConnellā€™s secret squirrel gang of 12 machinations.

There are reports today that Rosenstein may have to recuse himself, and that Trumpā€™s bizzaro Tweet attacking Rosenstein this morning has increased the odds that will have to happen. That would leave the number 3 person at DOJ in charge, Rachel Brand, who ā€“ just coincidentally of course ā€“ happens to be much more of a GOP loyalist.

So my take on this is that Trump is trying to maneuver Rosenstein out of the way without having to actually fire him. Then Brand could fire Mueller at a time of Trumpā€™s choosing, either using some cooked-up ā€œfor good causeā€ justification ā€“ or, alternatively, eliminate the regulations that prevent the President from firing Mueller himself, without the need to show ā€œgood cause.ā€

Of course none of this would prevent the epic shit-storm that would follow a Mueller firing. But Trump may believe (and may be right) that he can still count on the party-before-country GOP Congress to protect his ass from impeachmentā€¦at least through 2019.
