Discussion: Feinstein Announces She Will Run For Re-Election In 2018

In my opinion it is time for a younger generation to emerge. Ted Lieu and Adam Schieff among others.

I’d rather have Schiff and Lieu in the House - ready to lead the impeachment charge.

Good point.

In general, I agree that Democrats need to actively groom and promote the next generation of leaders, yet… some people use “time for younger generation” when they really mean “she is not progressive enough for me”. Her political positions are a fair game (a disclaimer: I anticipate voting for her over likely primary opponents, especially because I expect those opponents to be Sanderistas; I would seriously consider Schieff, I know less about Lieu). But as long as she is physically, mentally, and emotionally capable of doing the job – and she obviously is – I detest the ageism that “younger generation” implies.

Done correctly, the hard work in an impeachment is done in the House. The Senate just sits as a jury for the trial.

I see Schiff and Lieu as modern day Barbara Jordans.

Meh. Just Meh.

Schiff would run for her seat in a heartbeat and win. At least here the comments about Feinstein who is long in the tooth doesn’t include what I’ve seen on other comment boards including talk of Depends and Ensure. Frankly, I’m not sure I can support candidacy though I always have.

@antisachetdethe Jordan blew me away on the day she spoke about faith in the Constitution.

My faith in the Constitution is whole; it is complete; it is total. And I am not going to sit here and be an idle spectator to the diminution, the subversion, the destruction, of the Constitution.

She knows that the Democrats need all the safe Senate seats they can get in 2018 so that they can work harder on defending the red state D’s running for re-election and, possibly, take a few seats from the Republicans next year. It wouldn’t be too hard to replace Feinstein with another Dem next year, but it’s a distraction they don’t need

I keep hearing she’s grooming Eric Swalwell to take her place. Well hell, why not let him go for it now? This is a perfect cycle, with this midterm likely being a Rage Election against the GOP.

I did not mean to express any ageism. Sorry.

Even better:

"If the impeachment provision in the Constitution of the United States will not reach the offenses charged here, then perhaps that 18th-century Constitution should be abandoned to a 20th-century paper shredder."

You’re right of course, though I like Feinstein and am sad to say it. But there is a time to bow out gracefully, and 84 years of age just might be that time.

Even more important, there’s this:

Lots of aspects to consider here. But if she can win, in the end I’ll say more power to her. The essential thing is to keep that seat.

If you’re paying attention to California politics you’ll know there’s a move underfoot to push Pelosi out her leadership. Charge is being led by Linda Sanchez D-Ca, whose last big accomplishment was losing to Kamala Harris in the CA senate race. I too see agism under the guise of “not progressive enough.” The older one gets the more one sees and experiences ageism, and it’s present in the discussion of this 84-year old woman.

@26degreesrising

“The question is whether he can learn and change. If so, I believe he can be a good president.”

It’s exactly those comments about the moron which are getting her into trouble. She’s not enraged as most everybody is but is downplaying his incompetence, and she ought to know by now that who he is now with all his venality and corruption and vulgarity is what he’ll be forever.

Keep the seat, resign in 3 years, allow Gov. Newsom to appoint her successor.

Time for a challenge from the left.

Sure… anything to cut out the Sanders wing is cool with me.

Question: Are those “on the left” going to be actual Democrats or independents who try to hijack the Democratic primaries rather than go to the trouble of organizing on their own - with all the fundraising and pitfalls entailed?

Supposedly State Senator Kevin DeLeon (D-Los Angeles), the leader of the Democrats, is considering a challenge to Feinstein from her left.

He’s termed-out so he needs to find something to do anyways.

That, I would have no problem with. It’s when “independents” try to take over a party that I have concerns.
