Discussion: Fearing Election Day Trouble, Some US Schools Cancel Classes

By their actions, 40% of the American electorate have proven that they don’t want anything remotely resembling education interfering with their election. Closing the schools honors that choice, and is the logical progression…

I talked to an Elections Official about this. He said selecting voting locations is tricky, partly because there are restrictions on sites under the Help America Vote Act. It has rules requiring handicapped access, specific foot traffic flow and security access rules (e.g. no unlocked back doors in the voting room) and in my state, they even require voting locations to have a defibrillator on site. There are very few sites available on a broad scale that fulfill these criterion except schools.

Dang! When I was in high school, we never had any trouble during our student council or mock elections. What is our country coming to?
