Discussion: FDA Approves First-Ever Drug To Boost Women's Sex Drive

Discussion for article #239564

The drug’s label will bear a boxed warning — the most serious type — alerting doctors and patients to the risks of dangerously low blood pressure and fainting, especially when the pill is combined with alcohol. The same problems can occur when taking the drug with other commonly prescribed medications, including antifungals used to treat yeast infections.

On the bright side, the risk of Priapism is minimal.

And you take this pill for weeks and months on end. So I can’t have a glass or two of wine by the fire before making love to my wife because I might faint before we even reach the bedroom. Not to mention the nausea, drowsiness and dizziness. Sounds like a good time to me! I mean no alcohol? Seriously? What percentage of women are going to follow that warning?

This “new” pharmaceutical company, Sprout, whose only product will be Addyi, is just a legal renaming of a pharmaceutical company, whose only product was a testosterone “libido” supplement for men. It had been much criticized for not warning consumers of the side effects from taking a daily testosterone booster. They stopped selling testosterone and have switched to promoting a daily “libido” product for women.

Ms. Whitehead and hubby were the sole owners and executives of the previous company, and they still are the sole owners and executives of Sprout. Profits from testosterone sales allowed them to buy up the existing inventory and marketing rights from the German maker of Addyi, which stopped making the product because its own clinical testing showed the product was ineffective.

Over 50 years ago, FDA disapproval of the anti-morning sickness drug thalidomide, which was very popular in Europe, spared countless American women from delivering deformed babys. On the bright side for the FDA, any harmful side effects of Addyi won’t be so “photogenic”.
